JOB OVERVIEW

Hi — I'm Dylan.

I run a land investing company in the US. We buy raw land, and over the next four months I'm filming a weekly YouTube series documenting me rebuilding one part of the business completely from scratch — the real version, including the parts that don't work.

I'm looking for one editor to own all of the video output. Not a project. An ongoing role through the end of the year and beyond if it goes well.

What you'd be editing every week
1 long-form YouTube episode — 12 to 20 minutes, documentary / vlog style
4–5 short-form clips cut from that same footage, for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts
1 thumbnail per episode, generated using AI image tools

The raw footage is deliberately messy: recorded phone calls, screen recordings of software, me talking to camera, and calls with my team. Your job is turning that pile into something people actually finish watching.

What I actually care about
Retention. Tight cuts, no dead air, no 30-second intro. If three seconds are boring, they're gone.
You can find the story in the footage. I'm not handing you a script or a shot list. You get the footage and a few lines about what the episode is about. If you need to be told exactly what to do with every clip, this isn't the right role.
Clean on-screen text and simple graphics — numbers, labels, callouts. Not motion design. Readable and consistent.
Captions on everything.
You hit deadlines without me chasing you. This is the big one.
Requirements
Real experience editing long-form YouTube — talking head, vlog, or documentary style. Please don't apply if your portfolio is only wedding videos, corporate explainers, or gaming montages. It's a different skill and I'll be able to tell.
Strong short-form skills. You understand that the first second d ---------- whether the other 29 get watched.
Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut. CapCut is fine for shorts.
Comfortable making thumbnails with AI image tools (Midjourney, Nano Banana, Photoshop generative fill — whatever you actually use). I don't need a graphic designer. I need someone who can iterate on a thumbnail fast.
Written English good enough to understand my notes and to ask me a question when something is unclear.
Reliable internet and the ability to move large video files without drama.
Nice to have
You watch business / finance YouTube and know what good looks like in this space
Experience cutting recorded sales or phone calls into watchable segments
You have opinions about editing and are willing to tell me when I'm wrong about something
Hours, pay, and how we'd work
Part-time, roughly 15–20 hours per week
$800/month to start, moving to $1,000/month after a 60-day review if the work is good
You set your own hours. I care about deadlines, not when you work. I'm in California (PST).
Weekly rhythm: I drop the footage Friday, you deliver a first cut Monday, revisions and shorts Tuesday, we publish Tuesday.
First episode publishes September 16, so I'm hiring this week.
Paid on time, every time, twice a month.
