We are a U.S.-based behavioral healthcare organization seeking an experienced Verification of Benefits (VOB) & Medical Billing Specialist to join our team remotely from the Philippines.
This is a full-time, long-term position for someone who already has experience working with U.S. health insurance companies. Experience with behavioral health, mental health, or substance use disorder (SUD) treatment is highly preferred.
Responsibilities
- Complete Verification of Benefits (VOB) for prospective patients
- Verify insurance eligibility and active coverage
- Verify behavioral health and substance use disorder benefits
- Confirm in-network and out-of-network benefits
- Verify deductible, deductible met, out-of-pocket maximum, OOP met, copay, and coinsurance
- Determine authorization and pre-certification requirements
- Verify benefits for applicable levels of care, including Detox, Residential, PHP, and IOP
- Identify exclusions, limitations, and other potential coverage issues
- Contact U.S. insurance companies directly by phone and portal
- Obtain and document payer representative names and call/reference numbers
- Perform eligibility and benefit re-verifications as needed
- Complete claim-status follow-up
- Follow up on outstanding and unpaid claims
- Assist with rejected and denied claims
- Assist with accounts receivable (AR) follow-up
- Review EOB/ERA information as assigned
- Assist with insurance requests for medical records
- Support authorization tracking and payer follow-up
- Accurately document all insurance communications and activity
- Communicate important benefit, authorization, and billing issues to the U.S.-based team
Qualifications
Required:
- Minimum 2 years of experience with U.S. medical insurance, VOB, medical billing, or revenue-cycle operations
- Experience completing VOBs independently
- Experience calling U.S. insurance companies
- Strong understanding of deductibles, OOP maximums, copays, coinsurance, authorization, in-network/out-of-network benefits, and claim status
- Experience with medical billing, AR, denials, or claims follow-up
- Excellent spoken and written English
- Strong attention to detail
- Reliable internet connection and professional remote-work environment
- Understanding of HIPAA and the importance of protecting patient information
- Ability to work hours that overlap with U.S. Pacific Time and U.S. insurance company operating hours
Preferred:
- Behavioral health or substance use disorder billing experience
- Experience with Detox, Residential, PHP, and IOP levels of care
- Experience working with major commercial payers such as Anthem/Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna/Evernorth, UnitedHealthcare/Optum, and similar plans
- Experience with behavioral-health EMR/EHR or billing platforms
