About Us
Michaud CPAs is an accounting and fractional CFO firm providing outsourced accounting, financial reporting, and financial management services to growing U.S. businesses.
We are looking for an experienced, detail-oriented accountant to join our remote accounting team.
You will primarily support an established U.S. brewery business, working closely with our Accounting Team Lead and another bookkeeper.
This is a hands-on accounting position involving inventory accounting, account reconciliations, specialized excise tax reporting, and month-end close procedures.
We are looking for someone with strong accounting fundamentals who can work independently, investigate discrepancies, and take responsibility for completing assigned tasks accurately and on schedule.
Key Responsibilities
1. Inventory and Operational Accounting
- Prepare and review inventory reconciliations.
- Reconcile inventory records between operational systems and accounting software.
- Investigate inventory discrepancies and recommend adjustments.
- Assist with cost-of-goods-sold calculations and reconciliations.
- Prepare supporting schedules and journal entries.
- Identify unusual transactions and resolve accounting discrepancies.
2. Excise Tax and Regulatory Reporting
- Prepare recurring federal TTB excise tax calculations and filings relating to malt beverages, spirits, and wine/cider, as applicable.
- Prepare applicable Virginia ABC tax reports and related regulatory reporting.
- Reconcile tax calculations with inventory, production, and accounting records.
- Maintain accurate supporting schedules and documentation.
- Track filing deadlines and ensure that reports are prepared on time.
- Submit completed calculations and filing documentation for review and approval.
Previous experience with brewery excise tax reporting is an advantage but is not required. Training and established procedures will be provided.
This position does not involve preparing U.S. federal or state income tax returns.
3. Month-End Close and General Accounting
- Prepare assigned balance sheet reconciliations.
- Investigate and resolve differences between subsidiary records and general ledger balances.
- Prepare adjusting journal entries and supporting schedules.
- Assist with month-end accruals, prepayments, and other accounting adjustments.
- Support the Accounting Team Lead with monthly financial reporting.
- Maintain accurate records and complete assigned tasks according to the month-end close calendar.
4. Accounting Systems and Team Support
- Help investigate and resolve complex accounting system integration issues.
- Provide backup support for bookkeeping activities when necessary.
- Assist with reviewing transactions, researching discrepancies, and improving accounting processes.
- Maintain organized workpapers and clear documentation.
- Communicate proactively with the Accounting Team Lead regarding outstanding issues and approaching deadlines.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field.
- At least three years of professional accounting experience.
- Strong understanding of accrual accounting and financial statement preparation.
- Experience working with U.S.-based businesses or accounting firms.
- Demonstrated experience preparing account reconciliations and month-end journal entries.
- Experience with QuickBooks Online or comparable accounting software.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Ability to investigate and independently resolve accounting discrepancies.
- Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five or more years of relevant accounting experience.
- Experience with inventory accounting, manufacturing, or cost-of-goods-sold reconciliations.
- Experience preparing indirect tax, excise tax, or other recurring regulatory filings.
- Experience reconciling information between multiple accounting and operational systems.
- Experience working with breweries, manufacturers, or other inventory-intensive businesses.
- Philippine CPA qualification is an advantage but is not required.
Work Schedule and Compensation
- Approximately 15 hours per week.
- Working hours must fall between 7:00 AM and 12:00 noon U.S. Eastern Time.
- Some flexibility in the distribution of weekly hours may be required, particularly during month-end close and regulatory filing periods.
- Compensation: $9–$12 USD per hour, depending on experience.

We are looking for someone who can commit to a consistent schedule and accommodate the heavier accounting workload that occurs during the first half of each month.

Question 1: During month-end close, the inventory balance in the general ledger does not agree with the inventory valuation report from an operational system. Explain how you would investigate the discrepancy.
Question 2: You are responsible for preparing a recurring excise tax filing. The current month's reported quantities are significantly different from the previous month. What steps would you take before finalizing the filing?
