Australian Company
We are looking for an experienced Senior Shopify Developer to join our agency full-time and work with us long-term.
This is not a junior Shopify role, and it is not a position for someone whose experience is mainly installing themes, configuring apps or making simple CSS changes.
We work with established ecommerce businesses, including high-traffic Shopify stores, where the development work can involve complex theme architecture, custom product experiences, subscriptions, bundles, promotions, third-party integrations, custom applications and performance optimisation.
We need someone who understands the Shopify ecosystem deeply and can solve problems rather than simply follow step-by-step instructions.
What you'll work on
Your work will include a mixture of new development, ongoing ecommerce improvements and technically complex Shopify projects.
You may be:
- Developing and extending custom Shopify themes using Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript
- Building custom sections, components, product pages, collection experiences, carts and landing pages
- Developing sophisticated product interfaces and merchandising experiences
- Building custom bundles, product builders, quantity breaks, promotional mechanics and discount functionality
- Working with Shopify metafields and metaobjects to create flexible content and product architectures
- Integrating and customising Shopify apps
- Developing functionality around subscriptions, loyalty programs, reviews,
- Working with Shopify Plus features and more complex ecommerce requirements
- Developing Shopify Functions, Checkout UI Extensions or other Shopify extensibility features where appropriate
- Working with Shopify APIs, webhooks and third-party integrations
- Troubleshooting difficult bugs across themes, apps and integrations
- Improving Core Web Vitals, frontend performance and page speed
- Building responsive ecommerce interfaces that work properly across desktop and mobile
- Translating Figma designs into polished, production-ready Shopify experiences
- Improving existing designs where required rather than blindly reproducing them
- Working alongside developers, designers, marketers and ecommerce teams
- Maintaining and improving live stores where changes need to be made carefully
You will work across multiple ecommerce clients rather than one simple Shopify store.
Some projects are straightforward. Others are not.
We regularly deal with stores where Shopify is connected to a broader ecommerce technology stack and where seemingly simple requirements require thoughtful technical solutions.
What we're looking for
You should have strong commercial Shopify development experience and be comfortable taking ownership of development tasks from investigation through to production.
Shopify
You should be very comfortable with:
- Shopify Liquid
- Shopify theme architecture
- Online Store 2.0
- Sections, blocks, snippets and templates
- JSON templates
- Metafields
- Metaobjects
- Products, variants and collections
- Shopify Markets
- Cart and product form behaviour
- Shopify APIs
- Shopify's app ecosystem
- Git-based development workflows
You should understand Shopify well enough to know what the platform can do natively, when an app is appropriate, and when a custom solution is the better approach.
Front-End Development
Strong frontend development skills are essential.
You should be highly capable with:
- HTML
- CSS
- JavaScript
- Responsive development
- Browser debugging
- Frontend performance
- Accessibility fundamentals
- Modern ecommerce UI patterns
We care about the quality of the interface as much as whether the code technically works.
A component should not only function correctly. It should look polished, behave properly across screen sizes and feel like it belongs on a high-quality ecommerce website.
You should have a strong eye for spacing, typography, layout, interaction and responsive behaviour.
Ecommerce Experience
We want someone who understands ecommerce, not simply Shopify development.
You should understand concepts such as:
- Product merchandising
- Conversion-focused product pages
- Cart and checkout behaviour
- Upsells and cross-sells
- Subscriptions
- Bundles
- Discounts and promotions
- Loyalty programs
- Customer accounts
-
- Analytics and tracking
- Site performance
- Conversion rate optimisation
Experience working with apps and platforms such as the following is highly valuable:
- Klaviyo
-
- Loop Subscriptions
- Recharge
- Shopify Bundles
- Search & Discovery
- Yotpo
- Loox
- Product review platforms
- Upsell and cross-sell apps
- Search and merchandising platforms
- Other major Shopify ecommerce applications
You do not need to have used every application above. What matters is that you understand how these tools interact with Shopify themes, customer data and the broader ecommerce experience.
Highly regarded experience
The following will put you towards the top of our shortlist:
** Shopify Plus experience
Experience working on larger Shopify Plus stores is highly regarded. We are particularly interested if you have worked with high-traffic stores where development quality, deployment processes, performance and reliability matter.
** Custom Shopify app development
Experience building Shopify apps or private/custom integrations is a significant advantage. This could include experience with:
- Shopify Admin API
- Storefront API
- GraphQL
- Webhooks
- Shopify Functions
- Checkout extensions
- OAuth
- Node.js
- React
- TypeScript
** Modern frontend frameworks
Experience with technologies such as:
- React
- Next.js
- TypeScript
- Node.js
is valuable, particularly where Shopify forms part of a larger application or integration.
Experience with headless Shopify or Hydrogen is also useful, but is not required.
How we work
We are looking for someone who:
- Can investigate a problem before asking someone else to solve it
- Communicates clearly when something is blocked or unclear
- Thinks about edge cases
- Tests their work properly
- Does not consider something finished simply because it works on their own computer
- Writes maintainable code rather than quick patches
- Understands the consequences of changing a live ecommerce store
- Can estimate work reasonably and communicate when an estimate changes
- Uses Git properly
- Can review an existing codebase before d
- Pays attention to both technical quality and the customer experience
- Is comfortable working independently without disappearing for hours when something goes wrong
We do not expect you to know everything.
We do expect you to be able to work through unfamiliar technical problems methodically and communicate what you find.
Working hours
This is a full-time role requiring 40 hours per week.
You must be available to work:
Monday to Friday
9:00am–5:00pm AEST
This availability is important because you will be collaborating directly with our Australian team during the working day.
This is intended to be a long-term position, not a temporary project or short-term freelance engagement.
We want someone who can become an important part of our development team and build deep familiarity with our clients and their ecommerce environments.
Who should NOT apply
Please do not apply if:
- You are a junior developer looking for your first Shopify role
- Most of your Shopify experience is using the theme customiser or page builders
- You primarily install and configure themes rather than develop them
- You are not confident writing Liquid, JavaScript and CSS yourself
- You require detailed step-by-step instructions for development tasks
- You cannot consistently work Australian business hours and be available during work hours
- You are looking for occasional freelance work alongside another full-time position
- You are applying on behalf of an agency
- You are a recruiter
- You intend to subcontract the work to somebody else

Explain:
- What the requirement was
- Why it was difficult
- How you approached it
- What technologies you used
Tell us about your Shopify Plus experience
If you have worked with Shopify Plus, briefly explain what you worked on.
If you have not, simply say so.
Tell us about your experience with Shopify apps and ecommerce platforms
In particular, mention any experience with subscriptions, bundles, Klaviyo, loyalty programs, promotions, reviews, search, upsells or similar systems.
Tell us about any custom Shopify app or integration work
If applicable, describe what you built and the technologies involved.
Send us your GitHub, code samples or portfolio
Where client confidentiality prevents you from sharing code, explain your contribution instead.

Confirm that you can work full-time from 9:00am–5:00pm AEST, Monday to Friday.
At the beginning of your application, write:
"Cool Bananas"
Applications that do not include relevant Shopify examples or that appear to have been submitted by an agency or recruiter will not be considered and will be ignored.
Shortlisted applicants may also be asked to complete a small practical Shopify development assessment.
We are looking for someone excellent who wants to work with us for the long term.
