Who We Are:
We are Uniware, an established Australian tech company looking for a direct, long-term Senior PHP Engineer to join our team. We are NOT an agency. You will work directly with our Australian team.
The Role:
We look after a large number of PHP websites and applications for our customers: WordPress, Joomla, e-commerce shops and custom-built PHP systems. Many are old, undocumented and written by someone else. We need the person who can be handed any of them and work out what is wrong or what it needs, whether the answer is in the code, the database, the PHP runtime or the web server.
Examples of the work:
- Websites running on php-cgi that fall over under bursts of traffic, and moving them to PHP-FPM properly.
- Upgrading a customer's legacy website (WordPress, Joomla or custom PHP) to current PHP and MySQL versions without breaking it.
- Finding out why an online shop is slow or unreliable and fixing the cause, not the symptom.
This is not a role for installing WordPress, configuring plugins and page builders, or building themes.
Requirements:
Deep, long-standing experience with PHP itself, including framework-less PHP and other people's legacy code, not only one framework or CMS.
Code-level experience with WordPress and at least one other CMS or e-commerce platform (Joomla, WooCommerce, Drupal, Magento or similar), as well as custom PHP applications.
Experience upgrading applications across PHP versions (5.x / 7.x to 8.x) and MySQL versions.
A working understanding of how PHP is served and tuned on Linux: php-cgi, PHP-FPM, opcache, Apache or Nginx, and MySQL server behaviour (connections, slow queries, indexing).
Framework experience (Laravel, Symfony, CodeIgniter, CakePHP) is welcome but is not the focus of the role.
Ability to communicate technical roadblocks directly. (We value developers who say "I'm stuck, let's fix it" over those who hide problems).
Attention to detail check: When you fill out our Form, please start your "Cover Letter" section with the word "Kangaroo".
Our Vetting Process:
We do not do algorithm tests. You will be asked to do a short, asynchronous code review (spot the flaws in a piece of code we provide) via a screen recording, and to talk through a real scenario from our work, followed by a paid 3-hour trial task. Please write your form answers yourself: we will ask you about them in the recording.
Benefits:
Top-of-market salary paid directly via Wise/Remitly.
13th Month Pay included.
Australian working hours (Day shift in PH).
