ABOUT US
I'm an Enrolled Agent with 26 years in tax. I run Operation Zero Tax, a US tax advisory firm that does tax strategy, monthly bookkeeping, payroll and returns for high-income small business owners in 30+ states. We keep the books for about 100 clients every month.
Here's what makes this role different: AI prepares our books. It categorizes transactions, drafts reconciliations and builds the monthly financials. It's fast and it's good. It is not perfect, and it is never the final word.
You are the final word.
THE ROLE
You're a senior bookkeeper whose main job is reviewing, correcting and signing off on AI-prepared books before a client ever sees them. You'll also answer our phones and cross-train across the firm like everyone else on the team.
Bookkeeping review (most of your day)
- Review AI-categorized transactions every month and catch what it gets wrong: personal expenses, transfers booked as income, loan payments not split, duplicates, items that should be capitalized
- Own bank and credit card reconciliations. Find the real reason it's off. Never plug a difference
- Month-end close for a book of clients, with clean P&Ls and balance sheets
- Spot patterns in AI errors and write the rules or SOPs so it stops making them
- Write plain-English questions to clients when something needs their answer
- Take bookkeeping fully off our CFO's plate
Client support and phones
- Answer the firm's main line during US Eastern business hours
- Handle client questions about their books, documents and deadlines; route tax questions to the right person
- Cross-train on payroll support, document intake and tax-season prep like every team member
REQUIRED
- 4+ years of hands-on bookkeeping for US small businesses, including full month-end close and reconciliations
- Strong general ledger knowledge: you know the difference between an expense, an asset, a liability and equity, and why it matters
- QuickBooks Online and/or Xero experience. Other platforms are a plus
- Comfortable on the phone with US business owners. Clear, warm, confident spoken English
- Able to work 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM US Eastern, Monday to Friday, including January through April
- Reliable internet plus backup power and backup internet
STRONG PLUS
- Experience with S corporations (shareholder distributions, officer wages, owner health insurance)
- Sales tax, payroll (Gusto or similar), 1099 vendor tracking
- You already use AI tools and you're the one who double-checks their work
WHO THRIVES HERE
- You'd rather find the $540 error than force the reconciliation to zero
- You don't wait to be told. You fix it, document it, move on
- You ask good questions instead of guessing on things that matter
- You want a long-term home. I hire for years, not months
- Comfortable in a Christian-led workplace. Faith is part of how I run my businesses (no requirement that you share it)
PAY AND BENEFITS
- $1,500 to $2,200/month based on experience and what you show in the trial
- 13th month pay, paid time off, performance raises
- Paid trial task for shortlisted candidates
HOW TO APPLY
To show me you read this whole post, start your application with the exact phrase: "The books balance." Applications without it will be skipped, no exceptions.
Then send:
1. Your resume
2. Short answers to these three questions:
- Tell me about the worst set of books you ever cleaned up. What was wrong, how did you find it, and how did you fix it?
- An AI tool categorized 500 transactions for a client last month. You have 2 hours to review it before close. What do you check first, and why?
- A client calls upset: his P&L shows a loss, but he "knows" he made money this year. What do you say and what do you look at?
3. A voice recording, 1 to 2 minutes. Start by answering our phone as if a client just called: "Operation Zero Tax, this is [your name], how can I help you?" Then introduce yourself in English.
Shortlisted candidates get a few written follow-up questions, a 15-minute video call, then a paid trial task.
I read every application myself.
