CANDIDATE CASE EXERCISE Growing a Local Home-Services Business Marketing & SEO Role — Anchor Point Masonry Harrisburg, PA | South Central Pennsylvania Market COMPANY BACKGROUND The company is a home-services contractor based in the Harrisburg, PA area. Masonry work — including certified chimney repair — is the company's core specialty, with basement remodeling offered as a secondary service. The company positions itself as a regional specialist rather than a general contractor. COMPANY GOALS
? Generate a consistent flow of organic leads, not just paid ones.
? Improve the company website itself — design, usability, and overall quality.
? Build a stronger overall digital presence for the brand.
? Establish and grow a presence on relevant social media channels, which the company does not currently have.
? Be recognized in search and in the local market as the area's specialist in masonry and chimney work — not a generalist contractor.
? Spend marketing dollars efficiently, with every dollar traceable to a measurable outcome.
CURRENT SITUATION The company currently uses Houzz Pro as its CRM, and its website exists as a page inside that platform. The domain itself is owned by the company, but lead generation through the site appears limited within this setup. The company has no established social media presence. It is looking for a proposal on how to generate more organic leads and build a stronger digital presence overall.
YOUR TASK Assume you have just started in this role. Using the company background, goals, and current situation outlined above, answer each question as specifically as possible. Vague or generic answers will be weighted lower than concrete, defensible recommendations.
1. The website currently sits inside Houzz Pro, and the domain is owned by the company. Explain, technically, why lead generation and SEO performance are constrained in this setup — name the specific technical or structural limitations, not just "it's not our site." What specifically would change once the site moves to independent hosting?
2. Propose your organic lead generation plan. Name the specific channels you'd prioritize (and which you'd deliberately skip), and justify each choice against this company's market, trade, and customer type — not a general-purpose small-business answer.
3. Outline the website improvements you'd make, in priority order. For each one, state the specific problem it solves, how you'd verify it worked, and what you'd expect to see change if it didn't.
4. Give a concrete 30/60/90-day plan. Each phase should list specific deliverables and the metric that proves that phase succeeded — not just a list of activities.
5. Define your reporting model: what exact numbers would you track weekly and monthly, where would each number come from, and what specific result would trigger you to change course?
6. Propose a first-90-days budget broken into line items. For each line item, state the expected outcome you'd hold yourself accountable to, and how you'd know within 90 days if that line item wasn't working.
This is a working assessment, not a writing exercise. We are evaluating the specificity and technical grounding of each answer, not the length or polish of the writing. Answers that restate the prompt, rely on generic marketing language, or could apply to any small business without modification will be scored lower than answers that clearly reflect hands-on experience with a business of this type
