At Tank Stream Design we live to explore out and to help people experience the world. For over 25 years we have successfully designed and created apparel, hats, sunglasses and accessories that support everyone in their travel and adventures in nature.
We are looking for a technically minded Retail Design Support person to join our team on a part-time basis, supporting the development, documentation and production of retail fixtures and merchandising systems.
This role is focused on the detail between design concept and finished product — turning ideas, sketches and existing designs into accurate drawings, specifications and practical documentation that can be confidently manufactured, assembled and rolled out.
You will work remotely as part of our Retail Design and Visual Merchandising team, collaborating with internal stakeholders and external suppliers, across our suite of brands.
The Role
The Retail Design Support role will be responsible for supporting the technical development and documentation of retail fixtures, displays and merchandising systems.
You will help take concepts and briefs through to production-ready drawings, specifications and visual guides, while also supporting the creation of planograms, assembly instructions and sales tools.
This role would suit an Industrial Designer, Retail Fixture Designer, Product Designer or technically skilled Retail Designer who enjoys understanding how things are made and solving practical design problems.
Key Responsibilities
Fixture Design & Development
• Develop and refine retail fixtures, displays, stands and merchandising systems from concept through to production.
• Translate sketches, concepts, measurements and visual references into accurate CAD drawings and 3D models.
• Develop practical design solutions that consider materials, manufacturing, assembly, packaging and installation.
• Support the development of modular and repeatable retail fixture systems.
• Review existing fixtures and identify opportunities to improve functionality, construction and efficiency.
• Refine designs based on prototypes, samples, supplier feedback and testing.
Technical Documentation
• Produce detailed CAD drawings including plans, elevations, sections, details and component drawings.
• Prepare production-ready drawings and specifications for suppliers and manufacturers.
• Document materials, finishes, hardware, fixings, dimensions and assembly requirements.
• Prepare clear build notes and production instructions.
• Maintain organised drawing files, templates, specifications and revision control.
• Check drawings and documentation for accuracy, completeness and buildability.
Visual Guides & Sales Tools
• Create clear visual assembly and installation guides for suppliers, sales teams and field teams.
• Develop planograms and merchandising layouts that clearly communicate fixture and product configuration.
• Assist with the creation of Visual Merchandising and fixture standards.
• Develop simple diagrams and visual instructions that can be easily understood by non-technical users.
• Support the creation of sales tools and presentation materials for retail fixture solutions.
Production & Supplier Support
• Prepare and issue production-ready documentation to suppliers and manufacturers.
• Work with suppliers to clarify drawings and resolve technical questions.
• Support prototype and sample reviews and incorporate feedback into final documentation.
• Identify potential production or assembly issues and propose practical solutions.
• Help ensure finished fixtures meet design, specification and functional requirements.
Systems & Continuous Improvement
• Maintain organised libraries of fixture drawings, components, hardware and specifications.
• Support the development and maintenance of retail fixture standards and systems.
• Contribute to improving documentation templates, workflows and design processes.
• Help develop scalable systems that make future fixture development, production and rollout more efficient.
About You
We are open to the right person and value technical capability, practical thinking and attention to detail as much as years of experience.
You will ideally have:
• A qualification in Industrial Design, Product Design, Retail Design, Interior Architecture or a related discipline.
• Experience designing, developing or documenting retail fixtures, displays, furniture, products or similar physical systems.
• Strong CAD and technical drawing skills, with SketchUp experience highly regarded.
• An understanding of materials, manufacturing processes, construction methods and hardware.
• The ability to read and interpret technical and construction drawings.
• An understanding of how a design moves from concept through prototype, production and installation.
• Experience preparing production drawings and documentation for suppliers or manufacturers.
• Strong visual communication skills and the ability to make technical information easy to understand.
• Experience creating planograms, assembly guides, installation guides or similar documentation is highly regarded.
• Practical knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft 365.
• Excellent communication skills, with fluency in written and spoken English
• A highly organised, methodical and detail-oriented approach.
• The ability to work independently while communicating clearly with a remote Australian based team.
• A practical, solutions-focused mindset and willingness to investigate and solve problems.
• The ability to manage deadlines and multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Working Arrangement
This is a part-time remote role, working 2–3 days per week.
Working days and core hours will be agreed in advance and maintained on a consistent weekly schedule, providing reliable availability for collaboration with the wider Retail Design, VM and Production teams.
The role will primarily align with Australian East Coast business hours, with occasional communication required with our international teams and suppliers.
