Phone Screen Replacement & VFX Editor
I’m looking for an editor who is very good at realistic phone screen replacement, compositing, tracking, and green screen VFX.
I create a lot of golf and product content where I’m physically using a phone in the shot. The problem is that filming an actual phone screen often creates reflections, glare, exposure issues, flickering, or a screen that simply doesn’t look good on camera.
Because of that, I want to start filming some of these shots with a green screen displayed on the phone and have the actual screen content added afterward.
The goal is simple:
You should not be able to tell the phone screen was replaced.
What I’m Looking For
I will provide:
* Footage of me physically using the phone
* Green displayed on the phone screen
* Screen recordings or other footage showing what should appear on the phone
Your job is to take the screen recording and realistically composite it onto the phone.
This is NOT just putting a rectangular video over a green rectangle.
I need someone who understands VFX and compositing.
Tracking
The replacement needs to stay accurately attached to the phone throughout the shot.
That includes shots where:
* The phone moves
* The camera moves
* The viewing angle changes
* The phone rotates
* The perspective changes
* My fingers move across the screen
* Part of my hand passes in front of the display
* The phone moves closer to or farther from the camera
The screen should feel physically attached to the device.
No drifting.
No sliding.
No obvious tracking errors.
Make It Look REAL
This is probably the most important part.
I don’t want the screen replacement to look like a perfectly clean digital rectangle pasted onto the footage.
A real phone screen interacts with its environment.
Depending on the shot, that may mean accounting for:
* Perspective
* Screen brightness
* Exposure
* Contrast
* Reflections
* Glare
* Motion blur
* Depth of field
* Color temperature
* Environmental lighting
* Screen edges
* Finger and hand occlusion
If the original camera goes slightly out of focus, the replacement shouldn’t remain perfectly sharp.
If the phone moves quickly, the replacement should have believable motion blur.
If my finger crosses the screen, the graphic should remain behind my finger, not over it.
The details matter.
Golf Content
A lot of this will specifically be for golf technology and product content.
For example, I may be standing on a golf course using an app on my phone.
Instead of trying to perfectly expose the phone screen while also exposing the golf course, I can display green on the phone and provide you with a clean screen recording afterward.
You would then make it appear as though the actual app was naturally displayed on my phone when the footage was filmed.
The finished shot needs to fit into premium golf and brand content, so realism is much more important to me than flashy effects.
Creative Compositing
I’m also interested in someone who can take this further when appropriate.
There may be situations where information from the phone transitions into the real world.
For example, something displayed on the phone could subtly expand out of the screen and become an on screen graphic showing:
Hole information
GPS yardages
Golf course maps
Shot information
Product features
Statistics
Distances
App interfaces
That type of VFX can be really cool when executed properly.
But again, I want clean and premium, not futuristic holograms flying everywhere just because we can.
Style
The overall visual direction is:
Realistic.
Modern.
Clean.
Premium.
Subtle.
The best VFX in these videos should almost be invisible.
I don’t want the viewer thinking:
“That’s a cool green screen effect.”
I want them thinking:
“That’s what was on his phone.”
What I’m Evaluating
I’m looking for someone who understands the difference between basic editing and actual compositing.
Can you properly track a moving phone?
Can you handle changing perspective?
Can you preserve fingers and objects passing in front of the screen?
Can you match reflections, brightness, blur, and lighting?
Can you make a screen recording feel like it was actually being displayed on the device when I filmed it?
And when we want something more creative, can you take information from that phone and integrate it naturally into the real environment?
I create a lot of golf and product content, so I’m looking for someone I can potentially work with consistently on this type of VFX work.
