We are looking for an experienced, detail-oriented Part-Time Bookkeeper to join our team and support the bookkeeping and accounting needs of U.S.-based businesses.
This is not simply a data-entry position. We are looking for someone who understands bookkeeping and accounting principles, can accurately determine how transactions should be classified, understands how a Chart of Accounts works, and knows when something does not look correct.
The position will begin at approximately 20 hours per week, with the opportunity to grow into a full-time position for the right person.
Responsibilities
You will be responsible for tasks including:
Maintaining accurate books in QuickBooks Online
Reviewing and categorizing bank and credit card transactions
Understanding and correctly applying the client's Chart of Accounts
Identifying transactions that may be incorrectly classified
Bank and credit card reconciliations
Reviewing accounts for duplicate, missing, unusual, or incorrectly recorded transactions
Accounts payable and accounts receivable support
Understanding and processing payroll
Reviewing payroll reports and payroll-related transactions
Recording payroll entries correctly in QuickBooks
Assisting with month-end bookkeeping and account review
Preparing and reviewing basic financial reports, including:
Profit & Loss
Balance Sheet
General Ledger
Accounts Receivable
Accounts Payable
Maintaining organized financial documentation and supporting records
Communicating questions, discrepancies, or missing information clearly to our team
Following up on unresolved bookkeeping items instead of leaving them incomplete
Required Qualifications
You should have:
Strong experience with QuickBooks Online
A solid understanding of bookkeeping and basic accounting principles
Strong understanding of Charts of Accounts
Experience accurately categorizing and classifying transactions
Experience performing bank and credit card reconciliations
Experience with payroll and an understanding of how payroll affects the books
Experience working with U.S.-based businesses is strongly preferred
Strong attention to detail
Ability to identify when financial information does not make sense
Ability to research an issue before asking for assistance
Ability to work independently and manage recurring deadlines
Strong written English communication skills
Ability to communicate questions clearly and provide enough information for someone else to understand the issue
Technology Skills
Our team primarily works within the Microsoft ecosystem. You should be comfortable using:
Microsoft Teams
Microsoft Outlook
Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Word
Microsoft OneDrive / SharePoint
PDF documents and PDF editing/organization tools
Strong Excel skills are important. You should be comfortable working with spreadsheets, sorting and filtering information, using formulas, and reviewing financial data.
Schedule
This is a 20-hour-per-week position, Monday through Friday.
You must be able to work during U.S. Central Time.
We are flexible regarding the exact schedule. An earlier Central Time schedule or a later afternoon Central Time schedule can both work. We care more about establishing a consistent schedule, meeting deadlines, and being available to communicate with our team when necessary.
The schedule can be discussed and finalized with the selected candidate.
Compensation
$6–$8 USD per hour depending on experience and qualifications.
Candidates with significant U.S. bookkeeping, QuickBooks Online, and payroll experience may qualify toward the higher end of the range.
There is an opportunity for increased compensation and transition to a full-time position based on performance, reliability, accuracy, and the growth of the role.
What We Are Looking For
Accuracy is extremely important in this role.
We want someone who does more than simply categorize transactions based on what QuickBooks suggests. You should be able to look at the transaction, understand the business activity, understand the Chart of Accounts, and determine whether the accounting treatment makes sense.
If you are unsure, we expect you to ask. We would rather have a clearly documented question than an incorrect assumption.
At the same time, we value people who are resourceful and will investigate an issue before immediately asking someone else for the answer.
To Apply
Please include the following:
A brief introduction about yourself and your bookkeeping experience.
How many years of QuickBooks Online experience you have.
Whether you have worked with U.S.-based businesses.
Your experience processing or reviewing payroll.
Your experience working with Charts of Accounts.
Your current availability in U.S. Central Time.
Your desired hourly rate.
Any QuickBooks, accounting, bookkeeping, or payroll certifications you currently hold.
Please also answer this question in your application:

There is not necessarily one correct answer. We are interested in understanding how you think through bookkeeping decisions.
