PLEASE WRITE YOUR
As much as we want you to use AI as a part of this role, I want to know that you can write to me and explain these thoughts in your own words. It is very obvious that everyone is just using AI to submit for this job application.
----
Creative Nomads is a U.S.-based creative and digital company working with businesses to build smarter systems, stronger brands, and better digital experiences.
We’re increasingly integrating AI into how our company operates, and we’re looking for a technical partner who can help us build that infrastructure properly.
We aren't looking for someone whose AI experience begins and ends with writing prompts in ChatGPT.
We’re looking for a builder.
The Role
We’re hiring a Part-Time AI Engineer / Agent Systems Developer to help us architect, build, deploy, and maintain AI-powered systems and dedicated agents across our company.
You’ll work directly with leadership to turn business processes into reliable technical systems.
Some projects may involve creating dedicated AI agents. Others may involve APIs, backend services, databases, webhooks, authentication, cloud infrastructure, automation platforms, or securing systems that connect several services together.
The goal isn't to experiment with AI for the sake of experimenting.
The goal is to build useful systems that work.
What You’ll Work On
You may help us:
Design and build dedicated AI agents for specific business functions
Create multi-agent or agentic workflows
Connect AI systems to third-party platforms through APIs and webhooks
Build backend services and lightweight internal applications
Work with OpenAI and other LLM APIs
Design agent memory, retrieval, tool use, and knowledge systems
Implement RAG and vector database solutions where appropriate
Create secure authentication and permission structures
Deploy applications and services to cloud servers
Configure databases, servers, containers, and development environments
Monitor AI systems for failures, unexpected behavior, cost, and performance
Improve reliability and scalability as systems become more heavily used
Review existing architecture and recommend better approaches
Document systems so another engineer can understand what was built
Help us establish sensible cybersecurity practices around AI, APIs, credentials, client information, and internal systems
You'll also help us figure out when not to use AI. Sometimes a boring API call is the better answer. We consider that a feature, not a disappointment.
The Person We’re Looking For
Your strongest skill should be software engineering and building AI-powered systems.
You should be comfortable taking a business problem, thinking through the architecture, and then actually building the solution.
You Should Be Strong With:
Python
REST APIs and webhooks
LLM APIs such as OpenAI
Agent/tool-calling architecture
Backend application development
Git and version control
Databases
Authentication and API security
Linux/server environments
Cloud infrastructure
Debugging integrations between multiple systems
You should understand concepts such as:
API keys, OAuth, tokens, and secrets management
Permissions and least-privilege access
Database architecture
Queues and background processes
Logging and monitoring
Rate limits
Error handling
Containers and deployment
Basic network and server security
Secure handling of customer and company data
Nice to Have
Experience with some of the following is useful, but we don't expect one person to have mastered every tool on the internet:
OpenAI Agents SDK or similar agent frameworks
LangGraph, LangChain, CrewAI, AutoGen, or comparable frameworks
MCP
Docker
AWS, Google Cloud, Azure, DigitalOcean, or similar
PostgreSQL
Supabase
Vector databases
Redis
n8n, Make, Zapier, or similar automation platforms
Node.js / TypeScript
CI/CD pipelines
Security reviews or penetration-testing concepts
Building internal tools or SaaS applications
We care more about whether you understand the underlying architecture than whether you happen to know our exact technology stack on day one.
What Success Looks Like
Within your first few months, we'd expect you to:
Understand our existing technology and AI environment
Identify opportunities where dedicated agents can save meaningful time
Build and deploy your first production-ready agent or AI workflow
Create clear documentation for the systems you build
Establish repeatable development and deployment practices
Improve how we manage API credentials, permissions, and sensitive information
Help leadership make informed technical decisions instead of simply chasing whatever AI tool launched Tuesday morning
How We Work
We value people who:
Communicate clearly
Ask questions when requirements aren't clear
Think independently
Explain technical decisions in plain English
Raise security concerns rather than quietly ignoring them
Document their work
Test before shipping
Take ownership when something breaks
Enjoy learning new technology without needing to rebuild everything every six weeks
You don't need to know everything.
You do need to know how to figure things out.
How to Apply
Please send us the following:
1. A short introduction
Tell us about yourself and the type of engineering work you enjoy most.
2. Examples of your work
Send links to your GitHub, portfolio, technical projects, or other work you can share.
If previous projects are confidential, describe what you built, your role in the project, and the technologies involved.
3. Tell us about an AI system you've built
Briefly explain:
What problem it solved
How the system was architected
Which AI model or API you used
What other services it connected to
How you deployed it
What you would improve if you built it again
4. Answer this scenario
Imagine Creative Nomads wants an AI agent that can:
receive a request from a team member,
search internal company knowledge,
retrieve information from a third-party API,
perform an approved action,
and record what it did.
Briefly describe how you would architect this system.
We aren't looking for a 10-page technical specification. We want to understand how you think.
5. Security
Give us one example of a security risk you would consider when building an AI agent that can access company systems, and explain how you would reduce that risk.
6. Availability
Please include:
Your current location
Your available hours per week
Your normal working hours
Your desired hourly rate
Whether you currently work for other clients or employers
When you could start
Finally, include the phrase “Agents need guardrails” somewhere in your application so we know you read the entire post.
We're looking for someone interested in becoming a long-term technical partner as our AI capabilities grow.
If that sounds like your kind of challenge, we'd like to hear from you.
