JOB OVERVIEW

About us

We're a plaintiff personal injury firm. We handle catastrophic injury, trucking and commercial vehicle crashes, wrongful death, premises liability and medical malpractice. We have a few hundred open files and we're still growing. A former district judge and a former prosecutor run the firm, so we care a lot about honesty in how we report time, deadlines and mistakes.

What the job is

You take the file once suit is filed and carry it through trial prep. You know where every case stands and what's due next. Day to day, that means:

Pleadings: petitions, amended petitions and service
Discovery: interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admission, discovery responses, and defendants' written discovery questionnaires
Records and damages: records requests, business records affidavits, Section 18.001 affidavits, and watching for counter-affidavits
Experts: lining up experts, collecting reports and filing designations
Depositions: notices, subpoenas and exhibits, plus coordination with opposing counsel, court reporters and clients
Deadlines: calendaring the docket control order and tracking every deadline on every file
Mediation and trial prep: mediation packets, exhibit and witness lists, and pretrial filings

You'll work every day with the attorney, the case manager and the legal assistant on your team. There's no training period.

What we're looking for
At least one year of plaintiff personal injury litigation on filed cases
Working knowledge of Texas civil procedure
Daily use of case management software across a heavy caseload
The habit of telling the attorney bad news early

We don't hire people who pad their hours. This has to be your only job.

Working remote
A private workspace and internet reliable enough for depositions and client calls, with backup internet and backup power
Online during Central Time business hours, on camera for team meetings, and responsive on chat
Time logged by task as you go
Firm files stay in firm systems
Hours and pay

The job is 40 hours a week, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Central Time. In Manila, that's 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. from mid-March to early November, and 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. the rest of the year.

The rate is $6.00 to $10.00 per hour in U.S. dollars, as an independent contractor, based on your tested experience. Discretionary bonuses are available. Include your full ask in your application: rate, PTO, holidays, allowances and payment method.

Screening questions

Answer each one in a few sentences, in your own words. We care more about how you think than about polished writing.

A docket control order arrives with a trial setting eight months out. What goes on the calendar first, and how do you work backward from trial?
A defendant was served 24 days ago and there's no answer on file. What do you check, and what do you tell the attorney?
The defense serves a counter-affidavit to your client's Section 18.001 affidavit. What do you do that day, and what does it change about the case?
Expert designations are due Friday. The expert hasn't sent a CV or report, and the last provider's records haven't come in. What do you do, and in what order?
It's Monday. You have discovery responses due today, a deposition tomorrow with exhibits that aren't final, an upset client on the phone, and an attorney who wants an amended petition by Wednesday. How do you order that list, and why?
You realize a deadline on one of your files passed last week. What do you do in the next hour?

In your application, also confirm your rate and whether you work for anyone else now.
