Job Title:
Legal Assistant (Remote) – Drafting Legal Documents, Legal Research & Schedule Management
Job Description:
We are a small U.S.-based law firm seeking a detail-oriented and reliable Virtual Legal Assistant to support our practice. He or She will be our first virtual assistant and we will probably need their help on how to best use their help. The ideal candidate will have experience in drafting legal documents, tracking case deadlines and managing schedules, and will be comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, remote environment. A candidate with good English skills and a juris doctorate degree, or a law student is ideal. We don't expect it to start off as fast paced.
To keep it simple, we want someone who can:
Divorce Practice:
1. Draft uncontested divorce petitions for Illinois cases;
2. File the cases online;
3. Gather the needed information from the clients and draft the marital settlement agreements, judgments, parenting agreements, etc.
4. Once all the documents are prepared, schedule the court date.
Litigation:
1. Draft motions and responses to motions.
2. Organize case documents.
3. Research legal issues using
4. Monitor time tables for cases.
Responsibilities and more general items:
Draft, format, and review legal documents (such as divorce petitions, agreements, motions, pleadings, and correspondence) using templates and checklists provided.
Use AI to automate routine document drafting.
Maintain, update, and organize case files and digital records.
Track and manage attorney and court schedules, including deadlines, hearings, and client meetings.
Coordinate and follow up with clients as needed via
Assist with document automation and e-signature processes.
Research and summarize case law or statutes as assigned.
Support general administrative tasks and special projects as required.
Qualifications:
Excellent English communication skills (both written and spoken).
Prior experience drafting legal documents for U.S., U.K., Canadian, or Australian law is highly preferred.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to confidentiality.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Google Workspace, and PDF tools.
Familiarity with case management or legal practice management software is a plus.
Highly organized and able to manage multiple cases or projects at once.
Reliable internet connection and own computer with up-to-date software.
Preferred Skills:
Experience in family law (divorce, custody, child support) and/or litigation support.
Previous remote work for a legal, real estate, or business office.
Ability to learn new systems quickly and follow workflows or checklists.
Work Schedule:
Flexible, but must be available for some overlap with U.S. Central Time (Chicago).
