JOB OVERVIEW

We are a 13-person managed services provider (MSP) in San Diego, California, and this is the most unusual role we have ever posted.

We need one person who is genuinely two things: a Level 3 network engineer, and someone who builds AI automation. Most people are one or the other. If you are both, keep reading, because we will pay for that.

WHY THIS ROLE EXISTS

Our clients are asking what AI can do for their business, and we are past the point of guessing. We are building an AI practice: we sit down with a client, find the work that is eating their people's hours, and build something that takes it over. Then we manage and govern it every month.

You would be the technical half of that. And because you are also an engineer, you understand the systems the automation has to plug into - which is exactly why hiring two separate people does not work.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

- Sitting in a discovery call with me and a client, asking hard questions about how their business actually runs. Where do people burn hours? What gets copied between systems by hand? You are listening for the thing worth automating.
- Turning that into a real scope: what we build, what it costs one time, and what it costs monthly.
- Then building it. Support bots that answer the repetitive 50 to 60 percent of customer questions. Lead enrichment so a salesperson walks into a call already knowing who they are talking to. Automations that read email, pull data across systems, and take a whole process off a human's plate.
- Wiring AI into things that already exist: Microsoft 365 and Copilot, APIs, databases, ticketing systems.
- Governance: watching what the agents are actually doing, proving nothing strange is happening, and keeping records a client can show an auditor. AI governance is becoming a real standard (ISO 42001) and we intend to be good at it.
- And the engineering half: escalated tickets, Entra ID and Active Directory, firewalls, servers, migrations. You are still an engineer here.

WHAT YOU NEED ON THE AI SIDE

Real, shipped work - not a course certificate. LLM APIs, agents and tool use, RAG, automation platforms, and scripting in Python or PowerShell. If you have built something that is running in production and saving somebody hours every week, that is exactly what we want to hear about.

WHAT YOU NEED ON THE ENGINEERING SIDE

ConnectWise, Kaseya, Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, Windows Server, Active Directory, Hyper-V and VMware, Sophos / SonicWall / Ubiquiti firewalls, VPNs, DNS, switching, backups, and Hudu for documentation. You will not know all of it. Know most of it and learn the rest fast.

THE PART MOST ENGINEERS FIND HARDEST

You will be in the room with business owners. You need to explain a technical idea to a non-technical person and make them feel smart, not stupid. You need to hear "we just do it that way" and gently dig until you find out why. Your spoken English has to be very good, because you will be talking, not typing.

If sitting in a client meeting sounds worse than the technical work, this is the wrong role - and the other two jobs we have posted may fit you better.

THE SCHEDULE - READ THIS TWICE

8:00 AM to 5:00 PM San Diego time, Monday to Friday. In Manila that is 11:00 PM to 8:00 AM. It is a night shift. Client discovery calls happen during US hours and you need to be in them, so this one is not flexible.

We have a 15-minute stand-up on Microsoft Teams at 8:00 AM San Diego, on camera. After that you get your day to work - we do not sit on a video call all day.

You also need genuinely reliable internet and a computer, plus a backup plan for when the power goes out.

PAY

3,500 to 5,500 USD per month. This is well above our normal engineering range because the combination is rare. If you are genuinely strong at both halves, say so and we will talk.

HOW TO APPLY - THIS IS PART OF THE TEST

2. Your resume, plus a link to or a short description of something you actually built with AI.

3. A voice recording of yourself - WAV or MP3, two to three minutes - reading this question out loud and then answering it:
"Tell me about a time you watched someone doing a repetitive task and worked out how to automate it. How did you explain it to them?"
No ZIP or RAR files. Applications without a voice recording will not be reviewed - we need to hear how you explain things, because that is half of this job.

4. One line: can you work 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM San Diego time, five days a week, long term? Yes or no.
