Role: Junior Children’s Book Designer (Remote)
Client: Children’s book publisher in Canada
Engagement: Part-time, 20 hours per week
Schedule: 10am-2pm CA (ET, Eastern Standard Time / UTC-4)
Reports to: Operations, Marketing/Design Manager
**About the role:
We are a family-run children's book publisher specialising in novelty board books, including touch-and-feel titles, lift-the-flap formats and die-cut covers, stocked with major North American retailers. The design team is growing quickly and needs a reliable Remote Design Expert to take on a high volume of layout and production work, freeing the in-house team to catch up on the trade list and expand into a new range.
This is a production-focused design role. Briefs, artwork and text are prepared in advance by the in-house team. The Remote Specialist executes the layouts to a consistent, high standard, with room to bring their own judgement to how each title is handled.
**What you'll be doing:
-Laying out novelty board book titles in InDesign, working from supplied artwork (for example sticker sheets, Shutterstock assets and commissioned illustration) and finalised text
-Building and adapting novelty formats, including flaps, die-cuts and multi-spread layouts
-Handling overflow from the trade list and producing new titles for the bargain range
-Rolling a single format across multiple titles efficiently and accurately
-Following clear briefs, asking questions early, and keeping the team updated on progress
**What we're looking for:
-Proficiency in Adobe InDesign (non-negotiable)
-2 to 3 years of professional design experience
-Experience in children's or illustrated book design (strongly preferred)
-Own Adobe licence and reliable equipment
-A sense of style suited to young children: playful, warm and fun, never stiff or overly serious
-A strong communicator who takes direction well and checks in throughout a brief
-Reliable and predictable with hours and deadlines
-Willing to work the night shift in the Philippines to align with the client's working hours
-Good communicator, happy working in a team environment
