Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Insurance Billing Team Lead to oversee our insurance billing operations and support a team responsible for managing the complete insurance claim lifecycle. This role requires a strong understanding of insurance billing processes, excellent follow-up skills, and the ability to lead, train, and support a team while ensuring claims are accurately managed from initial submission through final processing and payment resolution.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with insurance claim follow-up, a strong background in dental or healthcare billing, and the ability to oversee daily workflows, provide guidance to team members, and ensure department goals are consistently met.
Key Responsibilities
Oversee and support the insurance billing team, including monitoring workflows, assigning priorities, and ensuring timely completion of claim follow-up activities.
Provide leadership, guidance, and coaching to team members to improve accuracy, efficiency, and overall performance.
Manage the full insurance claim lifecycle, from initial claim submission through final adjudication and payment resolution.
Follow up with insurance companies regarding outstanding, delayed, denied, or pending claims.
Review Explanation of Benefits (EOBs) and insurance responses to determine appropriate next steps.
Identify claim discrepancies, missing information, coding issues, and documentation requirements.
Work directly with insurance carriers to obtain claim status updates and resolve payment delays.
Monitor claim aging reports and ensure timely follow-up on outstanding claims.
Review team documentation and ensure all insurance communications and follow-up efforts are accurately recorded.
Assist with submitting corrected claims, appeals, and additional documentation when necessary.
Ensure insurance payments are posted accurately and unresolved balances are properly addressed.
Collaborate with billing, administrative, and clinical teams to resolve insurance-related issues.
Identify opportunities to improve processes, increase collections, and enhance overall billing efficiency.
Leadership Responsibilities
Supervise and support insurance billing staff to ensure department expectations are met.
Conduct regular reviews of team productivity, claim follow-up activity, and outstanding insurance balances.
Train new team members on insurance billing procedures, systems, and best practices.
Serve as a resource for team members when complex insurance issues arise.
Promote accountability, organization, and consistent follow-through within the department.
Qualifications
Previous experience in dental insurance billing, healthcare revenue cycle management, or a related field required.
Prior experience leading, supervising, or mentoring a billing team strongly preferred.
Strong understanding of dental insurance processes, claim submission requirements, and insurance terminology.
Proven ability to manage claims from submission through completion with consistent follow-up.
Experience handling denied claims, appeals, insurance correspondence, and claim resolution.
Excellent spoken and written English communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally and effectively with insurance representatives, patients, and internal team members.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple accounts and deadlines.
Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to research and resolve complex billing issues.
Ability to work independently while also providing leadership and support to a team.
Experience with dental billing software, electronic claim systems, and insurance portals preferred.
