GAMIFICATION SYSTEMS DESIGNER — Build the Engagement Engine That Makes Our Platform Impossible to Put Down
Do you dream in progress bars, XP curves, and reward loops? Do you understand why some products feel addictive-in-a-good-way while others feel like a chore? We're looking for a Gamification Systems Designer who lives and breathes behavioral design and can turn our platform into an experience users genuinely love to come back to.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You will own the design of our entire gamification layer from the ground up — the psychology, the mechanics, the economy, and the feedback systems that keep users motivated, engaged, and progressing. This is a rare opportunity to architect an engagement engine from a blank canvas, not just tweak an existing one.
WHAT YOU'LL BUILD
• A complete gamification framework grounded in the Octalysis Framework — designing intentionally across all 8 Core Drives: Epic Meaning & Calling, Development & Accomplishment, Empowerment of Creativity & Feedback, Ownership & Possession, Social Influence & Relatedness, Scarcity & Impatience, Unpredictability & Curiosity, and Loss & Avoidance.
• A points, XP, and leveling system with satisfying progression curves and clear milestones.
• Badges, achievements, and trophy systems that celebrate meaningful accomplishments.
• Leaderboards and social ranking systems (competitive, cooperative, and personal-best modes).
• A virtual currency and rewards economy — earning, spending, and balancing to keep it healthy and non-inflationary.
• Streaks, daily quests, and habit-forming loops that build sustainable engagement without dark patterns.
• Onboarding and tutorial flows that hook new users in the first 5 minutes.
• Reward schedules and variable reward mechanics grounded in behavioral psychology.
• Challenges, missions, seasons, and limited-time events to drive recurring activity.
• Social features: teams, guilds, referrals, gifting, and community-driven competition.
• Notification and re-engagement systems that bring users back at the right
• Analytics and instrumentation to measure engagement, retention, and the impact of every mechanic — then iterate.
THE SYSTEMS WE WANT TO CREATE (you'll help design & spec all of these)
1. Progression System — XP, levels, tiers, prestige.
2. Achievement System — badges, milestones, collections.
3. Reward & Economy System — points, virtual currency, shops, unlockables.
4. Social & Competitive System — leaderboards, teams, challenges, referrals.
5. Engagement Loop System — streaks, daily quests, missions, seasons.
6. Feedback System — instant visual/audio feedback, progress indicators, celebrations.
7. Onboarding System — first-time user experience, guided quests, early wins.
8. Retention System — smart notifications, comeback rewards, win-back campaigns.
9. Analytics System — event tracking, funnels, cohort analysis, A/B testing of mechanics.
WHO YOU ARE
• Deep, demonstrable understanding of the Octalysis Framework and behavioral/motivational psychology (intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation, white-hat vs. black-hat design).
• Proven experience designing gamification systems for apps, games, or digital platforms — with real results (engagement, retention, conversion).
• Strong grasp of game mechanics, economy design, and reward balancing.
• Comfortable turning psychology into concrete specs, wireframes, and requirements engineers can build.
• Data-driven — you measure, learn, and iterate rather than guess.
• Ethical designer — you build engagement that respects users and avoids manipulative dark patterns.
NICE TO HAVE
• Portfolio of shipped gamification systems or game design work.
• Experience with tools like Figma, Miro, or similar for mapping systems and flows.
• Familiarity with analytics tools (Amplitude, Mixpanel, GA) and A/B testing.
• Background in game design, UX, product, or behavioral economics.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE THIS ROLE
• Total creative ownership — you're the architect, not just an implementer.
• Direct impact — your work is the difference between a platform people use once and one they can't stop using.
• Collaborative team that values behavioral design as a core discipline, not an afterthought.
• Room to experiment, ship, measure, and grow.
HOW TO APPLY
Tell us about a gamification system you designed or admire, and explain why it works using the . Show us how you think about motivation — we care far more about your reasoning and results than a polished résumé. Bonus points if you include a quick idea for how you'd gamify OUR platform.
