Job Summary
Priority Haulage is seeking a capable and detail-oriented Management Accountant (Part-Time) to support the delivery of accurate and timely month-end financial reporting.
Working closely with the Financial Operations Manager and reporting to the Financial Controller, this role is responsible for maintaining financial integrity across core accounting processes, ensuring reliable data to support operational decision-making within a fast-paced, growing transport business.
This position is suited to someone highly proficient in Xero, comfortable working independently, and experienced in structured month-end close environments.
Job Responsibilities Overview
This is a hands-on, execution-focused role centred on the monthly financial close. The primary responsibility is to ensure all financial data is processed, reconciled, and reported accurately and on time each month.
The role requires availability for 1–2 days prior to month-end for close preparation, and approximately 8 working days post month-end to complete the close cycle. This is expected to equate to approximately 15–25 hours per month during this period, with specific scheduling aligned to month-end requirements and agreed with the successful candidate.
The role requires strong technical accounting capability, attention to detail, and a disciplined approach. Performance is measured by the accuracy and timeliness of reporting, adherence to internal processes, and the ability to consistently deliver high-quality outputs with minimal supervision.
Over time, there may be opportunities to contribute to financial analysis, system/process improvements, and data alignment initiatives, based on capability and demonstrated performance.
Job Responsibilities
• Prepare and analyse monthly management accounts using Xero and CCH Workpapers, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
• Perform key account reconciliations and resolve discrepancies prior to month-end close.
• Ensure all financial activities comply with New Zealand accounting standards and tax requirements.
• Maintain accurate financial records, filing systems, and data integrity in line with company standards
• Contribute to continuous improvement of financial processes, with a focus on efficiency and consistency.
Required Experience & Capability
Applicants should demonstrate proven experience operating in a structured, deadline-driven finance environment.
• Minimum 7+ years’ hands-on accounting experience.
• CPA qualification required, preferably a Regular Member of PICPA, with a recognised tertiary qualification in accounting.
• Proven experience preparing monthly management accounts, conducting financial analysis, and supporting budgeting and forecasting processes.
• Advanced proficiency in Xero is essential.
• Strong Microsoft Excel capability, with proven ability to reconcile and analyse data using XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, pivot tables, and financial modelling functions.
• Working knowledge of New Zealand tax regulations, accounting standards, and statutory compliance requirements.
• Demonstrated ability to operate independently in a remote environment, with strong self-management, reliability, and a consistent track record of meeting deadlines without oversight.
• Strong ability to collaborate cross-functionally, supporting finance-related workflows across the business.
• High level of technical proficiency, including the Microsoft platform, with working familiarity in modern business tools such as:
o Notion
o ChatGPT
Preferred Experience
• Experience within New Zealand or Australian Chartered Accounting firms, including use of CCH Workpapers.
• Exposure to a commercial business environment, ideally within transport, logistics, or fleet-based operations.
Personal Attributes
• Highly organised and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities reliably.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to operate autonomously while contributing effectively in a remote team environment.
• Analytical and problem-solving capability, particularly in identifying, investigating, and resolving financial discrepancies.
• Proactive and improvement-oriented, with the ability to adapt, optimise workflows, and navigate operational change.
• Professional, client-focused mindset, demonstrating integrity, quality standards, and accountability in delivery.
