Role Overview
The Director of Operations is a senior operations leader responsible for overseeing, optimizing, and scaling day-to-day operations across banking and financial services functions, including retail banking, commercial banking, fintech, and payments. This role requires a highly autonomous executive with deep operational expertise in regulated financial environments and a proven ability to lead distributed teams with minimal supervision.
The ideal candidate is execution-focused, process-driven, and comfortable operating with a high degree of accountability in a fully remote setting.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Strategy & Execution
Develop and execute operational strategies aligned with business objectives, regulatory requirements, and growth initiatives.
Translate executive and product strategy into scalable, efficient, and well-controlled operational processes.
Identify operational risks, inefficiencies, and control gaps; implement corrective actions proactively.
Drive continuous improvement across core financial services operations.
Banking, Financial Services & Payments Operations
* Oversee operational functions across one or more of the following areas:
- Retail banking (deposits, consumer lending, account servicing)
- Commercial banking (credit operations, loan servicing, treasury services)
- Fintech operations (digital onboarding, transaction monitoring, customer support)
- Payments (authorization, settlement, reconciliation, disputes, fraud operations)
* Ensure operational compliance with applicable banking, financial, and payments regulations.
* Partner closely with compliance, risk, legal, and finance teams to maintain strong operational controls.
* Support regulatory exams, audits, and operational reviews.
Performance Management & Metrics
Establish and manage operational KPIs, SLAs, and performance dashboards.
Use data-driven insights to improve efficiency, accuracy, turnaround times, and customer outcomes.
Ensure consistent execution of operational processes across distributed teams and time zones.
Provide regular operational reporting to executive leadership.
Remote Leadership & Team Management
Build, lead, and scale high-performing operations teams in a fully remote or distributed environment.
Set clear goals, expectations, and accountability with minimal day-to-day supervision.
Implement structured workflows, documentation, and communication rhythms to support remote execution.
Coach, develop, and hold leaders accountable for performance, compliance, and results.
Foster strong cross-functional collaboration in a remote setting.
Process, Systems & Scalability
Partner with technology and product teams to optimize operational systems, automation, and workflows.
Lead process documentation, standardization, and control design suitable for regulated environments.
Ensure operational readiness for new products, market expansion, or increased transaction volumes.
Balance speed, scalability, and risk management without compromising compliance.
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Operations Management, Finance, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
Minimum of 10 years of progressive operations leadership experience in banking, financial services, fintech, or payments.
Prior experience as Director of Operations, Senior Operations Manager, or equivalent leadership role.
Demonstrated success leading remote or distributed teams with minimal supervision.
Strong knowledge of banking operations, payments, regulatory requirements, and operational risk.
Proven ability to operate independently, prioritize effectively, and deliver results in high-accountability environments.
