JOB OVERVIEW

Job type: Project based initially, with potential for ongoing work

Company: Raven Engineering Group, Australia

We are an Australian manufacturer of bolted steel water storage tanks looking for an experienced computational structural engineer to help develop an automated panel thickness selection and estimating tool.

Our goal is to develop a system that can estimate steel panel thicknesses and material quantities based on different tank configurations.

What we want to build

A practical engineering estimation tool where our team can enter:

Tank diameter and height

Wind region and design wind loads

Seismic requirements

Steel grades (G350 and G450)

Panel dimensions and configuration

Other relevant structural design parameters

The system should calculate indicative panel thicknesses for different tank courses and estimate material quantities for tender pricing.

We want to explore using finite element analysis (FEA), Python automation, parametric modelling and AI to automate the process rather than manually engineering every tank configuration.

We may have access to existing Strand7 and SPACE GASS models, but applicants must also be comfortable developing the system from scratch if required.

Required skills

Structural engineering and finite element analysis

Python programming and automation

Parametric structural modelling

Steel plate design, buckling and structural optimisation

Experience with FEA software such as Strand7, SPACE GASS, ANSYS, Abaqus or similar

Ability to automate multiple engineering scenarios and extract results into Excel or a simple software interface

Experience with Australian structural design standards and bolted steel water tanks would be highly regarded.

Project approach

We are not expecting a fully certified engineering design system immediately.

The priority is to develop a preliminary estimating tool that provides reasonably reliable results for our common tank configurations.

We would like to start with a small paid trial to demonstrate the approach, followed by further development if successful.

The system should be scalable so we can continue improving the accuracy and expanding the range of tank configurations over time.

Final structural designs will remain subject to engineering verification.

How to apply

Please message me directly on WhatsApp:

---------- In your message, please include:

Your relevant structural engineering and FEA experience.

Any previous projects involving Python automation, parametric modelling or structural optimisation.

How you would approach developing this tool, including starting from scratch.

Your estimated timeframe and cost for an initial working prototype.

Examples of similar work you have completed.

We are looking for someone technically capable who can help us develop a practical solution, not just undertake individual structural calculations.

There is potential for ongoing engineering and software development work with our Australian business.
