JOB OVERVIEW

Your Essential Techs is seeking a hands-on Cloud Engineer to design, deploy, automate, secure, and support cloud infrastructure across AWS and Microsoft Azure.

This role is focused on engineering reliable cloud environments, improving automation, maintaining security and governance standards, and supporting hybrid infrastructure. The ideal candidate can translate technical requirements into practical solutions, implement them through repeatable processes, and document the final environment clearly.

Your Essential Techs is an Information Technology consulting and training organization based in El Cajon, California. We support small-business technology projects and operate hands-on IT training programs focused on infrastructure, systems administration, networking, and cloud technologies.

Key Responsibilities

Cloud Infrastructure

• Design, deploy, and maintain cloud infrastructure in AWS and Azure.
• Build secure and scalable compute, storage, networking, database, identity, and backup solutions.
• Support cloud-native, hybrid-cloud, and on-premises-to-cloud environments.
• Assist with workload migrations, modernization, and proof-of-concept deployments.
• Maintain standards for naming, tagging, resource organization, and lifecycle management.

Infrastructure as Code & Automation

• Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code using Terraform.
• Create reusable modules and repeatable deployment patterns.
• Automate provisioning and operations using PowerShell, Python, Bash, and Ansible.
• Use Git and controlled change processes for infrastructure deployments.
• Identify and eliminate repetitive manual work through automation.

Cloud Networking

• Design and support VPCs, VNets, subnets, routing, DNS, gateways, peering, VPNs, and load balancing.
• Troubleshoot connectivity, firewall, name-resolution, and routing issues.
• Support secure connectivity between cloud and on-premises environments.
• Maintain current network and architecture diagrams.

Security, Identity & Governance

• Implement IAM, RBAC, least privilege, MFA, encryption, secrets management, and secure configuration standards.
• Support AWS IAM and Microsoft Entra ID, including roles, policies, service identities, and application access.
• Maintain tagging, logging, access-review, and policy standards.
• Review security findings and drive practical remediation.
• Support audit readiness and clear documentation of technical controls.

Monitoring, Reliability & Recovery

• Implement monitoring, logging, alerting, dashboards, and health checks.
• Investigate incidents, identify root causes, and improve system reliability.
• Manage backup, retention, restoration, and disaster-recovery processes.
• Monitor capacity, performance, availability, configuration drift, and cloud cost.
• Create operational runbooks for common failures and recovery procedures.

CI/CD & Cloud-Native Technologies

• Support CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions, Jenkins, Azure DevOps, GitLab, or similar tools.
• Work with Docker and containerized workloads.
• Support Kubernetes platforms such as Amazon EKS or Azure Kubernetes Service when required.
• Apply secure, version-controlled, and repeatable deployment practices.

Documentation & Project Delivery

• Create and maintain architecture diagrams, build documents, implementation plans, SOPs, and runbooks.
• Document technical decisions, risks, dependencies, rollback plans, and support procedures.
• Track work, blockers, and project status in Jira.
• Communicate technical recommendations clearly to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

• 7+ years of overall professional IT infrastructure experience
• 5+ years building and operating production workloads in AWS or Azure.
• Hands-on experience deploying or supporting production workloads in AWS or Azure.
• Strong understanding of cloud compute, storage, networking, identity, security, monitoring, and backup.
• Practical experience with Terraform or another Infrastructure as Code platform.
• Scripting experience with PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
• Experience supporting Linux and Windows Server.
• Working knowledge of Active Directory and Microsoft Entra ID.
• Experience with Git and version-controlled technical work.
• Strong troubleshooting and technical documentation skills.
• Strong written and verbal English communication.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working across both AWS and Azure.
• Experience with AWS services such as VPC, IAM, EC2, S3, RDS, Route 53, CloudWatch, Lambda, and EKS.
• Experience with Azure Virtual Networks, Azure Policy, Defender for Cloud, Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Entra ID, and Azure Cost Management.
• Experience with Ansible, Docker, Kubernetes, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or Azure DevOps.
• Experience connecting on-premises infrastructure to cloud services.
• Experience with VMware, Hyper-V, Nutanix, or similar virtualization platforms.
• Experience with cloud cost optimization, backup, disaster recovery, and incident response.

Preferred Certifications

• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate or Professional
• Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate (AZ-104)
• HashiCorp Certified: Terraform Associate
• AWS Certified SysOps Administrator – Associate
• Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
