Storyboard Artist — Short-Form Branded Stories
About CLNR Studios
CLNR Studios is a US-based content production and growth agency creating imaginative short-form videos for brands, founders, and businesses.
Our work combines storytelling, humor, emotion, and visually interesting concepts. We’re looking for a storyboard artist who can take an approved script and translate it into a clear visual plan that our production team can execute.
The Role
As our Storyboard Artist , you’ll determine how each written story unfolds visually.
You will receive an approved script, creative treatment, and production information. Your responsibility will be to visualize the scenes, compositions, performances, camera angles, movement, and transitions before filming begins.
This is not a general illustration, graphic-design, or social-media-design role. Your boards must function as practical production tools for live-action shoots.
We value clear visual storytelling over highly polished artwork. A simple drawing that communicates the shot perfectly is more useful than a beautiful illustration that leaves the production team with unanswered questions.
What You’ll Do
- Read and interpret approved scripts and creative treatments.
- Translate written stories into sequential storyboard panels.
- Determine the strongest visual approach for each scene and story beat.
- Establish shot sizes, camera angles, composition, and perspective.
- Visualize talent placement, expressions, actions, and blocking.
- Indicate camera movement, subject movement, and screen direction.
- Plan visual reveals, transitions, match cuts, and comedic or emotional beats.
- Identify establishing shots, close-ups, inserts, reaction shots, and essential coverage.
- Show how products, props, locations, and wardrobe appear within each scene.
- Add concise action, dialogue, audio, timing, and camera notes beneath each frame.
- Design boards for vertical 9:16 video while accounting for captions and on-screen graphics.
- Flag concepts that may require special equipment, visual effects, complex locations, or additional production resources.
- Collaborate with the scriptwriter, creative producer, director, and production team.
- Revise storyboards based on creative, client, and production feedback.
- Deliver organized files for client approval, filming, and post-production.
Types of Projects
You may storyboard:
- Whimsical branded stories
- Character-driven short films
- Dialogue scenes and comedy sketches
- Product stories and demonstrations
- Founder and spokesperson videos
- Visual metaphors and transformations
- Emotional brand pieces
- Direct-response video concepts
- Recurring characters or episodic content
- Videos involving practical effects, visual effects, or complex transitions
Most finished videos will be approximately 15 seconds to three minutes long.
Typical Deliverables
Depending on the project, you may provide:
- Scene-by-scene storyboard panels
- Scene and shot numbers
- Shot size and camera-angle labels
- Talent positioning and blocking
- Character expressions and actions
- Camera- and subject-movement arrows
- Dialogue or voiceover references
- Timing estimates
- Transition and editing notes
- Prop, wardrobe, and location details
- Lighting or production-design references
- Vertical 9:16 composition guides
- One or two revision rounds
- Final PDF and editable source files
- Optional animatic for more complex productions
Required Qualifications
- Professional storyboarding or sequential-art experience.
- A portfolio demonstrating clear visual storytelling.
- Strong understanding of composition, perspective, staging, and continuity.
- Ability to communicate action, emotion, timing, and movement through sequential images.
- Understanding of shot sizes, camera angles, blocking, eyelines, and screen direction.
- Ability to storyboard for live-action production—not only animation.
- Ability to interpret a script and make thoughtful visual decisions.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Excellent written communication.
- Comfortable receiving feedback and revising creative work.
- Reliable communication and deadline management.
- Ability to balance visual ambition with real production limitations.
Preferred Experience
- Commercial or branded-content storyboarding
- Short films, comedy, or narrative video
- Music videos
- Vertical short-form content
- Live-action production
- Cinematography or directing
- Production design
- Editing and post-production
- Animatics
- Visual-effects planning
- Agency or client-facing work
## Tools
You may use tools such as:
- Storyboard Pro
- Boords
- Procreate
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Illustrator
- Figma
- FrameForge
- Blender
- SketchUp
- AI-assisted image tools
We care more about the clarity and usefulness of your boards than which software you use. If AI tools are used, the final storyboard must still demonstrate visual consistency, intentional shot design, and your own creative judgment.
What Success Looks Like
- The production team can understand the story without additional explanation.
- Every panel communicates a specific and intentional shot.
- Talent blocking, camera direction, and important actions are clear.
- The storyboard preserves the tone and emotional intent of the script.
- Potential production challenges are identified before the shoot.
- The crew arrives knowing what must be captured.
- The editor receives the coverage necessary to construct the intended story.
- Boards are delivered on time and require progressively fewer revisions.
