In this role, you'll shape manuscripts into polished, publish-ready books across three worlds: novels, short stories, and children's books. You'll sharpen the language, guard the flow, and design pages that feel effortless to read. You'll work closely with authors, many of whom are pouring deeply personal experiences onto the page. Your job is to protect their voice while making the work shine.
This is careful, quiet work that changes how a story reaches people. If you love the craft of a clean sentence and a well-set page, I'd love to meet you.
Key Responsibilities
Manuscript editing: Edit novels, short stories, and children's books for clarity, structure, pacing, and impact — always preserving the author's voice and intent.
Proofreading: Catch and correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and syntax before a book ever reaches a reader.
Formatting for print: Lay out interior pages for print publishing, including margins, typography, spacing, chapter openers, and image placement (especially for illustrated children's titles).
Formatting for digital: Prepare clean, reflowable files for eBook and other digital platforms, ensuring the reading experience holds up across devices.
Style consistency: Build and apply style guides so every element — from headings to dialogue punctuation to page numbering — stays consistent throughout each project.
Working with authors: Communicate with authors in a supportive, clear way. Offer honest feedback with care, explain your choices, and keep them confident through each stage.
Quality control: Review final proofs against publishing standards to make sure each book is ready for release.
Required Qualifications
Proven experience editing and formatting books for publication across multiple genres.
Hands-on proficiency with publishing and layout software such as Adobe InDesign and Scrivener.
Strong knowledge of print and digital publishing standards, including file preparation for print-on-demand and eBook platforms.
Expert command of grammar, spelling, punctuation, and one or more style guides (such as Chicago Manual of Style).
A portfolio of past work showing published or publish-ready books you've edited and formatted.
Sharp attention to detail and the patience to catch what others miss.
Clear, kind communication skills for guiding authors through the process.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience formatting illustrated children's books, including image and text coordination.
Familiarity with additional tools like Vellum, Affinity Publisher, or Kindle Create.
Understanding of ISBN assignment, barcodes, and back cover and metadata requirements.
Background in self-publishing or working with independent authors.
A feel for different age groups and genres, and how each one reads on the page.
What Makes a Strong Applicant
The best person for this role is part craftsperson, part guide. You notice the small things — a comma out of place, a chapter that opens on the wrong page — and you fix them without losing sight of the bigger story. You know that formatting a children's book asks for something different than a literary novel, and you adjust with ease.
You treat each author's work as if it were your own, yet you never lose your objectivity. You can be honest about what isn't working and generous in how you say it. Above all, you believe a well-made book is worth the effort, because someone trusted you with their words.
If that sounds like you, bring your portfolio and your love of the craft. We're ready to build something meaningful together.
