About the Role
We are looking for a skilled book editor and proofreader to line edit an 80,000-word leadership and personal development book on a tight timeline. The manuscript needs a thorough line edit and proofread — no formatting or layout work is required (page formatting for KDP will be handled separately by another team member).
This is a time-sensitive, project-based engagement with a hard deadline of October 12, 2026. We need someone who can turn this around quickly and deliver polished, publication-ready copy.
The client is a US-based leadership coaching organization, so the content will center on personal growth, leadership principles, and coaching frameworks.
Core Responsibilities
Line Editing (50%): Review the full 80,000-word manuscript for clarity, sentence structure, flow, readability, and tone consistency. Ensure ideas are communicated effectively and transitions between sections are smooth.
Proofreading & Grammar (40%): Correct spelling, punctuation, grammar, and typographical errors throughout the manuscript. Ensure consistency in style, capitalization, hyphenation, and formatting of names/terms.
Style & Consistency Review (10%): Flag or resolve inconsistencies in terminology, voice, and formatting conventions across chapters. Apply standard editorial conventions (Chicago Manual of Style or AP Style as appropriate for nonfiction/self-help).
What We're Looking For
Proven experience editing and proofreading long-form nonfiction manuscripts (50,000+ words)
Strong command of English grammar, punctuation, and style conventions
Ability to complete a full edit of an 80,000-word manuscript within 3–5 days
Familiarity with Google Docs or Microsoft Word track changes/suggesting mode
Excellent attention to detail and consistency
Reliable communication and ability to meet hard deadlines without reminders
Portfolio or samples of previous book editing work (required)
Nice to Have
Experience editing in the leadership, coaching, personal development, or self-help genre
Familiarity with KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) manuscript requirements
Experience with style guides (Chicago Manual of Style preferred for nonfiction)
Prior work with independent authors or small publishing teams
