The Accounting Manager is responsible for managing accounting, bookkeeping, financial reporting, and advisory services for a portfolio of clients. This role oversees client engagements from planning through completion, reviews work prepared by accounting staff, ensures compliance with applicable accounting standards and regulations, and serves as a trusted advisor to clients.
The Accounting Manager also supports firm growth, manages client relationships, develops team members, and helps ensure engagements are delivered accurately, efficiently, and profitably.
Key Responsibilities
Client Accounting and Advisory Services
Manage a portfolio of clients across various industries and business sizes.
Oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual accounting and financial reporting engagements.
Review general ledger activity, journal entries, reconciliations, and adjusting entries.
Prepare and review financial statements and management reports in accordance with applicable accounting standards.
Analyze financial information and provide clients with meaningful business insights.
Assist clients with budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow analysis, and financial planning.
Advise clients on accounting policies, internal controls, process improvements, and financial procedures.
Assist with accounting system implementation, cleanup, and process optimization.
Identify and communicate accounting issues, risks, and opportunities to clients and firm leadership.
Engagement and Quality Management
Plan, schedule, and manage client engagements to meet deadlines and budgets.
Review workpapers, reconciliations, reports, and other deliverables for accuracy and completeness.
Ensure engagement work complies with firm policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements.
Monitor engagement budgets, billing, realization, and profitability.
Coordinate with tax, audit, payroll, and advisory teams as appropriate.
Resolve complex accounting and client-service issues.
Maintain complete, organized, and well-documented client files.
Team Leadership
Supervise, train, coach, and evaluate accountants and other engagement staff.
Assign work based on team capacity, experience, and engagement requirements.
Provide timely feedback and technical guidance.
Review staff work and support professional development.
Promote consistent use of firm processes, technology, and quality-control procedures.
Client Relationship Management
Serve as a primary point of contact for assigned clients.
Build and maintain strong, long-term client relationships.
Communicate engagement status, deadlines, findings, and recommendations clearly.
Lead or participate in client meetings and presentations.
Identify additional service opportunities and collaborate with partners on business development.
Respond promptly and professionally to client questions and requests.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
[5–8] years of progressive public accounting or client accounting experience.
Previous experience supervising accounting staff or managing client engagements.
Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP or applicable local accounting standards.
Experience preparing and reviewing financial statements.
Solid understanding of general ledger accounting, reconciliations, month-end close, and financial reporting.
Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel.
Strong project management, analytical, and organizational skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple clients and meet competing deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications
CPA, ACCA, CMA, or equivalent professional qualification.
Experience in a public accounting, outsourced accounting, or CAS environment.
Experience with accounting platforms such as QuickBooks Online, R365, or similar systems.
Knowledge of audit, tax, payroll, and advisory services.
Experience serving clients in industries such as professional services, construction, nonprofit, real estate, healthcare, or technology.
Experience with practice-management and workflow systems.
Strong business-development and client-advisory experience.
