Capita Business Advisors and Tax Consultants is an established Australian accounting, taxation and business advisory practice expanding our Philippines-based team.
We are seeking an experienced AU Senior Accountant / Tax Reviewer & Team Leader with strong Australian public-practice experience and proven technical review and leadership capabilities.
This is a senior technical and supervisory position, not a routine tax preparation or data-entry role. The successful candidate must independently review accounting and taxation work, identify errors and compliance risks, supervise staff, manage deadlines and prepare complex work when required.
You will work closely with the Principal Accountant in Australia, ensuring high-quality work, accountability and continuous process improvement.
Key Responsibilities
- Independently prepare and review Australian financial statements and income tax returns for companies, trusts, partnerships and individuals.
- Apply strong technical knowledge of Australian taxation, including CGT, Division 7A, trust distributions, GST/BAS/IAS, depreciation and director/shareholder loan accounts.
- Prepare and review financial reports in accordance with applicable Australian Accounting Standards (AASB).
- Critically review accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, superannuation, balance-sheet reconciliations and supporting workpapers, identifying errors and ensuring corrections are completed.
- Undertake hands-on accounting, bookkeeping and reconciliations when required, including transactions involving e-commerce and payment platforms.
- Supervise accountants and bookkeepers, delegate tasks, monitor deadlines, provide review notes and ensure timely completion of work.
- Communicate directly with Australian clients and follow up outstanding information, accounting queries and compliance matters.
- Prepare and review management accounts, budgets, cash-flow forecasts, actual-versus-budget reports and variance analysis, providing meaningful financial insights.
- Mentor team members and improve accounting procedures, workflows, quality control and review processes.
- Use Xero, MYOB, Excel, AI and other accounting technologies effectively while maintaining professional judgement and confidentiality.
- Work closely with the Principal Accountant in Australia on complex technical matters, client issues, workflow management and practice development.
- Support the future growth of the Philippines team, including recruitment, training, systems implementation and potential office establishment.
- Be available for occasional international business travel, including Australia, when reasonably required.
What we are looking for
Minimum five years of hands-on Australian public-practice accounting and taxation experience, including proven experience independently reviewing financial statements, income tax returns and workpapers prepared by other accountants.
Accounting or related degree; CPA, CA or equivalent professional qualification highly regarded.
Strong practical knowledge of Australian taxation, including company and trust taxation, Division 7A, CGT, GST, depreciation and trust distributions.
Demonstrated ability to independently prepare and critically review company, trust, partnership and individual income tax returns, identifying errors, compliance risks and matters requiring further investigation.
Sound knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards (AASB), financial statement preparation, year-end adjustments and tax reconciliations.
Proven experience reviewing bookkeeping, balance-sheet reconciliations, financial statements and tax work, providing clear review notes and ensuring identified issues are satisfactorily resolved.
Strong proficiency in Xero and Australian tax preparation software. Experience with Xero Tax, Xero Practice Manager (XPM) and MYOB will be highly regarded.
Strong Excel skills, with experience in management reporting, budgeting, cash-flow forecasting and variance analysis considered an advantage.
Excellent written and spoken English, with the confidence to communicate directly with Australian clients and explain accounting and taxation matters professionally.
Demonstrated leadership and organisational skills, including the ability to delegate tasks, supervise junior accountants, monitor deadlines and follow up outstanding matters with staff and clients.
Strong technical judgement, attention to detail and the ability to distinguish between routine corrections and complex matters requiring escalation to the Principal Accountant.
A proactive, accountable and hands-on approach, with the ability to manage assigned work independently while assisting with accounting, bookkeeping, reconciliations and tax preparation when required.
Working Arrangement & Growth
The role will initially be remote and based in the Philippines.
As our Philippines operation grows, we may develop an office-based or hybrid team structure. The successful candidate may also take on broader leadership and operational responsibilities over time, with remuneration reviewed accordingly.
Recruitment Process
Shortlisted candidates will be invited to complete a paid practical Australian accounting and taxation assessment before the final interview.
The assessment will focus on reviewing accounting records, reconciliations, financial statements, tax returns and supporting workpapers. Candidates will be expected to identify errors, provide review notes and demonstrate their ability to resolve issues or escalate complex matters appropriately.
This assessment is designed to evaluate practical experience, technical expertise, independent review capabilities, professional judgement and attention to detail.
Direct Applicants Only
We welcome applications from qualified individuals seeking a long-term career opportunity with our practice. We recruit directly and do not consider applications from recruitment agencies, outsourcing or staffing providers, subcontractors or third-party representatives.
All applicants are expected to participate personally in the recruitment process and complete their assessments independently.
