We are a 13-person managed services provider (MSP) in San Diego, California, hiring one senior engineer in the Philippines. Permanent, work-from-home, and we mean long-term - one of our engineers in India has been with us for 15 years and has flown out to visit us several times.
THE PERSON WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The engineer we are after is simple to describe: we can hand them anything, and they will solve it.
Not the person who knows every product - nobody does. The person who, when something breaks that they have never seen before:
- Finds out what is actually happening before touching anything. Reads the real error. Checks what changed. Does not randomly restart things and hope.
- Narrows it down on purpose, ruling things out one at a time instead of guessing.
- Owns it until it is finished. Does not hand a half-solved ticket back and say "still broken."
- Documents while the work is fresh. Everything we figure out goes into Hudu, our knowledge base, so the next engineer who hits that problem fixes it in ten minutes instead of three hours. The best engineers here are the ones whose write-ups everybody else relies on.
- Says "I don't know yet - here is how I will find out." We respect that more than a confident wrong answer.
- Knows the difference between "keep digging" and "ask for help now."
- Is genuinely curious. Takes the weird ticket because the weird ticket is interesting.
If you are the person your team quietly forwards the nightmare tickets to, we want to talk to you.
A DAY IN THE LIFE
This is not a guess. It is what our senior engineer in San Diego actually does, and it is the seat you would fill:
- 8:00 AM - 15-minute stand-up on Microsoft Teams. Who is stuck, what is on fire.
- Then the escalations: tickets that already defeated someone else, where the obvious fix did not work.
- Underneath them there is almost always a project moving - a Microsoft 365 or Entra ID migration, a server replacement, a new firewall, a client leaving an old domain. You push it forward even on a busy day.
- Identity work constantly: Entra ID and Active Directory, conditional access, MFA that broke, onboarding and offboarding gone sideways.
- Networking: SonicWall, Sophos and Ubiquiti firewalls, dropped VPN tunnels, VLANs, DNS, switches.
- Servers: Windows Server, Hyper-V and VMware, Exchange, storage, backups that did not run.
- Security alerts to judge - real, or noise? Both answers cost you if you get them wrong.
- Writing up what you learned in Hudu before closing it out.
- Occasionally something breaks after hours and you are the person who can fix it.
No two days look the same. If you want to do the same three tasks forever, this is the wrong job.
WHAT WE RUN
ConnectWise, Kaseya, Microsoft 365 and Entra ID, Windows Server
You will not know all of it. You should know most of it and learn the rest fast.
ABOUT US
Completely virtual, and we genuinely like each other. Whoever we add has to fit that:
- Good vibes
- Hard working
- Customer caring
- Friendly
- Open to suggestions, easy communication
- Most of us really love music and chat about fun things on our Microsoft Teams board
- Willing to share your technical opinion on how to fix something
THE SCHEDULE - READ THIS TWICE
This is a full night shift in the Philippines. You work US Pacific business hours:
- 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM San Diego time, Monday to Friday.
- That is 11:00 PM to 8:00 AM Manila in the US summer, midnight to 9:00 AM in the US winter. Our clocks shift twice a year, yours do not.
- A 15-minute stand-up on Teams at 8:00 AM San Diego, on camera. After that you get your day to work - we do not sit on a video call all day.
We are not asking for a few hours of overlap. Your whole working day is our working day. Do not apply if that will make you miserable in six months - we are hiring for the next ten years.
ALSO IMPORTANT
- You need genuinely reliable internet and computer, plus a real backup plan when power or internet goes out.
- You must be comfortable on camera and on the phone with American clients. Your English must be very good - spoken, not just written.
- Log your time every day.
PAY
2,200 to 3,200 USD per month, based on real technical depth and English. We pay at the top of that range for the right person and do not haggle over a few dollars with someone we intend to keep for a decade.
HOW TO APPLY - THIS IS PART OF THE TEST
1. Subject line, exactly this format:
L3 Engineer - [Your Name] - [the song you would put on while fixing a dead server at 2 AM]
2. Attach your resume.
3. Attach a voice recording - WAV or MP3 - reading these two questions out loud and then answering them:
- "Tell me about the hardest technical problem you ever solved, and how you figured it out."
- "What do you do when you are completely stuck?"
Two to three minutes is plenty. No ZIP or RAR files. Applications without a voice recording will not be reviewed - we do this so we do not waste your time or ours on a call that was never going to work.
4. One line: can you work 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM San Diego time, five days a week, long term? Yes or no.
OUR PROCESS
Stage 1 - these questions and your voice recording.
Stage 2 - a skills conversation on Microsoft Teams, 30 to 90 minutes.
Stage 3 - a hands-on test in a live environment, and we pay you for your time.
Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom : )
