PROJECT: The Royal Edit — Inaugural Holiday Edition 2026
PUBLICATION: Quarterly Women's Leadership & Lifestyle Magazine
PROJECT TYPE: Freelance / Contract with Potential for Ongoing Quarterly Work
FIRST EDITION: 32 Pages, Including Covers
BUDGET: $600–$850 USD for the complete inaugural issue, depending on experience and portfolio

ABOUT THE PUBLICATION

Jolease Publishing is launching The Royal Edit, a sophisticated quarterly magazine celebrating extraordinary women, leadership, entrepreneurship, reinvention, community impact, and personal legacy.

We are seeking an exceptional magazine designer with proven experience creating high-end, luxury editorial publications.

Our vision is to produce a magazine with the sophistication, elegance, and visual storytelling associated with premium national lifestyle and business publications.

We are NOT looking for a basic graphic designer, Canva template designer, or someone whose primary experience is formatting books, ebooks, brochures, or flyers.

We need a designer who understands how to create a visually compelling magazine that feels luxurious, professionally art-directed, and worthy of a national audience.

THE DESIGN STYLE WE EXPECT

The Royal Edit must have a polished, upscale editorial aesthetic.

Our visual direction includes:

Sophisticated editorial typography and elegant font pairings

Luxurious, visually engaging magazine spreads

Strong photography placement and art direction

Creative use of white space and balanced composition

Beautiful feature-story layouts with visual hierarchy

Elegant pull quotes, headlines, and article treatments

Premium advertising layouts

A cohesive design identity throughout the publication

Rich royal purple, champagne gold, ivory, black, and sophisticated neutral tones

Professional layouts comparable in quality to established luxury lifestyle magazines

We want a magazine that looks professionally art-directed—not like a collection of Canva templates.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS

You will design the complete inaugural edition of The Royal Edit.

The magazine will include:

1. Premium Editorial Features

Elegant feature-story spreads showcasing accomplished women, their journeys, and their contributions.

2. Leadership and Business Articles

Sophisticated article layouts that combine professional photography, readable text, headlines, and editorial design elements.

3. Royal Honors Recognition Section

Beautifully designed recognition pages featuring four women per page, with photographs, brief profiles, professional information, and quotes.

4. Sponsored Business Spotlights

Premium two-page sponsored features showcasing women-owned businesses and entrepreneurs.

5. Royal Marketplace

An attractive, professionally designed business directory that complements the magazine's luxury aesthetic.

6. Advertisements

Professional placement of supplied advertisements, including full-page and premium cover-position advertising.

7. Cover and Magazine Branding

Work within the established branding of The Royal Edit and prepare the final cover using approved artwork and photography.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE

Applicants MUST demonstrate:

Professional experience designing complete magazines

Strong proficiency in Adobe InDesign

Excellent editorial typography and page composition

Experience designing premium lifestyle, fashion, luxury, business, or similar publications

Ability to design cohesive multipage publications

Experience preparing files for professional printing

Understanding of print bleeds, margins, CMYK, image resolution, and PDF export specifications

Ability to work independently and meet firm deadlines

Excellent communication skills

Experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is strongly preferred.

REQUIRED DELIVERABLES

The selected designer must provide:

A complete, professionally designed 32-page magazine.

A high-resolution, print-ready PDF prepared to the printer's specifications.

A digital PDF optimized for online reading.

An organized, fully editable Adobe InDesign package, including linked assets and required project files.

Up to two reasonable revision rounds.

Consistent typography, branding, and editorial styling throughout the publication.

The digital version must accommodate clickable links where appropriate.

PORTFOLIO REQUIREMENTS — VERY IMPORTANT

DO NOT APPLY WITHOUT RELEVANT MAGAZINE DESIGN SAMPLES.

We are specifically interested in reviewing:

Complete luxury magazine projects

High-end editorial spreads

Sophisticated feature-story layouts

Professional magazine covers

Premium lifestyle or business publication design

We do not want portfolios consisting primarily of social media graphics, brochures, flyers, ebooks, journals, planners, or basic book formatting.

Please provide links to at least two complete magazines or substantial multipage editorial projects you personally designed.

We must be able to see interior pages—not just magazine covers or mockups.

HOW TO APPLY

To be considered, please submit:

1. Your Portfolio

Links to your two strongest magazine design projects, including interior spreads.

2. Your Experience

Briefly explain your experience designing luxury, lifestyle, business, or editorial magazines.

3. Your Design Software

Confirm that you use Adobe InDesign and can provide fully editable source files.

4. Your Availability

Confirm whether you are available to begin immediately and can meet our production schedule.

5. Your Project Rate

Provide your total fixed price for designing a 32-page magazine, including the deliverables and revision rounds described above.

6. Your Design Approach

In two or three sentences, explain how you would make a women's leadership magazine feel luxurious, sophisticated, and visually distinctive.

IMPORTANT SELECTION REQUIREMENT

We will shortlist applicants based primarily on the quality of their actual magazine design work.

Applicants who submit generic graphic design portfolios without professional magazine interior layouts will not be considered.

Shortlisted candidates may be invited to complete a small paid design test using sample content supplied by Jolease Publishing.

We are seeking a talented designer interested in developing a long-term relationship as The Royal Edit grows into a quarterly publication.
