Employment Type: Part-Time, Long-Term Independent Contractor

About Southwind Marketing

Southwind Marketing is a U.S.-based, full-service marketing and communications agency serving businesses, municipalities, economic development organizations, tourism agencies, nonprofits, and other organizations nationwide.

We specialize in website design and development, digital marketing, branding, search engine optimization, and strategic communications.

We build and manage websites across multiple industries and are looking for a detail-oriented website specialist who can independently evaluate website quality, identify opportunities for improvement, and help our team create better digital experiences.

About the Role

We are looking for someone who can look at a website and immediately begin identifying what works, what doesn't, and what needs to change.

This position combines website quality assurance, UI/UX design, website auditing, and redesign recommendations.

You will work alongside our existing design and development team to ensure our websites are professional, functional, accessible, user-friendly, and ready for clients.

We are not looking for someone who simply checks whether a website loads, runs an automated scan, or produces generic AI-generated recommendations.

We want someone who understands how websites should actually work, can identify problems others overlook, and knows how to improve both the appearance and functionality of a website.

The ideal candidate can independently review an entire website, document problems, recommend specific corrections, and develop professional redesign concepts that our team can implement.

This is a hands-on position requiring strong attention to detail, independent judgment, and the ability to communicate findings clearly.

Key Responsibilities

Website Auditing & Quality Assurance

Conduct comprehensive website audits before launch and on existing client websites.

Review every accessible page to identify design, usability, content, and functionality issues.

Identify broken links, incorrect navigation, formatting issues, missing content, inconsistent layouts, and other website defects.

Evaluate navigation menus, dropdowns, breadcrumbs, buttons, forms, and interactive elements.

Test websites on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.

Verify that pages, features, and user journeys function as intended.

Identify inconsistencies between pages, including spacing, typography, imagery, colors, and branding.

Recheck corrections completed by developers to verify that issues have been resolved.

UI/UX Design & Website Redesign

Evaluate website layouts, navigation, visual consistency, and overall user experience.

Identify opportunities to improve website organization, readability, accessibility, and usability.

Develop redesign recommendations and visual mockups using Figma.

Recommend improvements to page layouts, calls to action, navigation structures, and user journeys.

Evaluate websites from the perspective of actual users and potential customers.

Collaborate with our design and development teams to improve overall website quality.

Technical Review & Optimization

Review basic technical SEO, including page titles, meta descriptions, heading structures, and internal linking.

Identify accessibility concerns and recommend improvements consistent with WCAG standards.

Evaluate website speed and performance using available testing tools.

Identify mobile responsiveness problems and browser compatibility issues.

Review calls to action, lead-generation opportunities, and conversion paths.

Identify potential website security or technical configuration concerns visible through authorized, non-invasive testing.

Reporting & Communication

Prepare comprehensive, professional website audit reports.

Include screenshots, affected URLs, descriptions of problems, and recommended corrections.

Classify findings by severity and business impact.

Create prioritized action plans for our development team.

Clearly distinguish critical issues from minor improvements.

Communicate findings in professional written English.

Independently manage assigned reviews and meet established deadlines.

Qualifications

Required:

Demonstrated experience auditing, designing, or improving professional websites.

Strong understanding of UI/UX design principles and responsive website design.

Experience using Figma to develop website layouts and mockups.

Familiarity with WordPress websites and common website development practices.

Ability to identify visual design problems and functional website defects.

Understanding of basic technical SEO and website accessibility.

Experience evaluating websites across desktop and mobile devices.

Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Ability to write clear, actionable website audit reports in English.

Ability to work independently without constant supervision.

Reliable internet connection and access to the tools needed to perform website evaluations.

Preferred:

Experience working with U.S.-based marketing agencies.

Experience with municipal or government websites.

Experience with e-commerce websites, including Shopify.

Knowledge of WCAG accessibility guidelines.

Familiarity with Google PageSpeed Insights, Lighthouse, Screaming Frog, or similar auditing tools.

Understanding of conversion rate optimization.

Experience reviewing websites developed by other designers or developers.

Experience creating website redesign concepts from existing websites.

Required Skills Assessment — Complete Before Applying

Every applicant must complete a website evaluation as part of the application process.

We believe demonstrated ability is more important than a résumé alone.

Rather than relying solely on interviews or portfolios, we want to see how you independently evaluate a real website.

Assessment Website

----------

This is a staging website provided specifically for evaluating applicants.

It contains a combination of functional elements, design decisions, and potential quality concerns.

Your task is to conduct an independent evaluation and submit a professional website audit.

We are intentionally not providing a checklist of known problems. Part of this assessment is determining what deserves attention, identifying issues independently, and explaining how you would improve the website.

We want you to evaluate the entire website, not just the homepage.

Your Website Audit Must Include

1. Executive Summary

Provide your overall assessment of the website, including:

Overall website quality and professionalism.

What the website does well.

Major weaknesses or concerns.

Whether you believe the website is ready for public launch.

Your highest-priority recommendations.

2. What's Working

Identify elements that are effective and explain why they should remain.

We are not looking for an audit that simply criticizes everything. Good designers and auditors understand what should be preserved as well as what should be changed.

3. Design & User Experience

Evaluate:

Overall visual appearance and professionalism.

Branding consistency.

Typography and readability.

Colors, spacing, and alignment.

Page layouts and visual hierarchy.

Website navigation and organization.

Mobile and tablet responsiveness.

User experience and ease of navigation.

Consistency across different pages.

4. Website Functionality

Review the accessible pages and interactive elements.

Identify anything that appears broken, confusing, incomplete, inconsistent, or improperly functioning.

Explain the issue, where you found it, and how it should be corrected.

5. Technical & SEO Review

Evaluate the technical elements that can be reviewed through publicly accessible website pages and standard auditing tools.

Include:

Page titles and meta descriptions.

Heading structure.

Internal linking.

URL structure.

Image optimization concerns.

Website performance.

Mobile usability.

Technical configuration concerns.

Important: This is a staging website and is intentionally not intended for search engine indexing. Do not automatically classify its lack of search engine indexing as a defect. We expect applicants to understand the difference between development and production environments.

6. Accessibility

Identify accessibility concerns and recommend specific improvements.

Consider:

Color contrast.

Readability.

Navigation accessibility.

Image alternative text.

Form accessibility.

Keyboard accessibility where testable.

General WCAG considerations.

7. Redesign Recommendations

Explain what you would change, why you would change it, and how the proposed changes would improve the website.

We want specific design recommendations, not generic statements such as "make the website more modern" or "improve user experience."

8. Prioritized Action Plan

Organize your findings into the following categories:

Critical: Problems that prevent important functionality or create significant usability issues.

High Priority: Problems that materially affect website quality, accessibility, or user experience.

Medium Priority: Improvements that should be addressed before or shortly after launch.

Low Priority: Minor refinements, enhancements, or optional improvements.

Provide a clear recommendation for each identified issue.

9. Visual Design Sample

Using Figma, create a redesign concept for one page or section of the assessment website that you believe would benefit from improvement.

Your design should demonstrate:

Professional design judgment.

Strong visual hierarchy.

Improved usability.

Consistent branding.

Thoughtful layout decisions.

Include a brief explanation of why you made your proposed design changes.

Assessment Submission Requirements

Your submission must include:

Website Audit Report (PDF): A professional report documenting your findings across the website.

Supporting Evidence: Screenshots, page URLs, and explanations supporting your identified issues.

Actionable Recommendations: Specific corrections that a website developer could reasonably implement.

Prioritized Issue List: Findings organized by severity.

Figma Redesign Sample: A shareable link to your proposed redesign.

Time Spent: The approximate amount of time you spent completing the assessment.

We value clear, accurate, and well-organized work over unnecessary report length.

Important Assessment Instructions

You may use professional website auditing tools, browser developer tools, and other resources to assist with your evaluation.

However, we expect independent analysis, firsthand website testing, and original recommendations.

Generic automated reports, unsupported findings, and AI-generated summaries without demonstrated website inspection will not meet our standards.

Simply entering the website URL into an AI tool and submitting its output is not an acceptable assessment.

We will evaluate:

Your ability to identify actual website problems.

Your attention to detail.

Your technical understanding.

Your UI/UX design judgment.

The accuracy and usefulness of your recommendations.

Your ability to prioritize issues.

The professionalism of your report.

Your ability to communicate instructions that developers can implement.

Do not make changes to the website. This is a read-only assessment. Do not attempt to access administrative areas, bypass security controls, perform intrusive testing, or submit excessive automated requests.

We recommend limiting your initial assessment to approximately 60–90 minutes. A concise, evidence-based report is preferable to a lengthy report filled with generic observations. If selected for the next stage, you may be invited to complete a more detailed paid assessment.
