We are developing Pebble Scrub, a premium handheld body scrub system inspired by the smooth, organic shape of a river stone.
The product will feature a durable, reusable Pebble body with interchangeable scrubbing attachments, allowing customers to choose different textures and replace attachments while keeping the main body.
We are looking for an experienced Industrial Designer / Product Design Engineer to develop the product through material selection, ergonomic design, mechanical engineering, functional prototyping, and manufacturing preparation.
The goal is a product that feels comfortable, performs well in actual shower use, and can be manufactured at a commercially viable cost.
The product should include:
Reusable Pebble body: A compact, lightweight frame with a premium appearance, comfortable handling, and secure grip with wet, soapy hands. Final material, dimensions, and construction are open to your recommendations.
Interchangeable scrubbing attachments: Potential options include soft silicone, African-net-style exfoliating mesh, and a lathering sponge. Charcoal-containing sponge or textile options may also be explored.
Shared attachment system: A secure, discreet connection that supports different attachment materials and allows easy removal for replacement, rinsing, and drying.
Practical drying/storage solution: A hanging loop or another well-integrated solution.
We have explored an earlier concept and identified several areas requiring improvement: excessive size and weight, overly stiff silicone, and inadequate lathering. These findings will help guide development.
Your responsibilities will include:
Recommend suitable materials and manufacturing processes for the body, attachments, and any attachment carriers or backing components.
Develop the Pebble shape for comfortable use across different adult hand sizes.
Establish target dimensions and weight early, supported by printable sizing models and estimated production weight.
Evaluate attachment mechanisms such as mechanical retention, magnetic attachment, or another practical approach.
Ensure attachments remain secure during wet scrubbing, twisting, and repeated removal. If magnets are proposed, address corrosion protection and secure retention within the product.
Engineer a common connection that works with both molded silicone and textile/sponge attachments.
Develop and compare suitable silicone softness, thickness, and surface patterns through physical samples.
Address lathering, rinsing, drainage, drying, and access for cleaning.
Apply design-for-manufacturing principles, including wall thickness, draft, parting lines, tolerances, assembly, and tooling complexity.
Support prototype evaluation and revisions based on actual use.
Development should follow clear milestones, beginning with the body’s size, handling, material direction, and connection concept.
Early STL files are required so we can print sizing models in-house before detailed engineering proceeds. Functional prototypes should then be used to evaluate weight, wet grip, attachment security, scrubbing feel, and lathering before final manufacturing decisions.
Required deliverables include:
Editable native CAD files for all designed parts and assemblies.
STEP/STP files for manufacturing and supplier review.
STL files for early sizing checks and subsequent prototypes.
Dimensioned drawings with critical interface dimensions and tolerances.
Exploded assembly views and a bill of materials.
Material, surface finish, and manufacturing recommendations.
A prototype/testing plan and documented revisions.
Updated design files following agreed manufacturer DFM feedback.
For textile or sponge attachments, provide appropriate material and assembly specifications alongside CAD for their carriers.
We will provide concept images, reference products, written requirements, feedback from earlier prototype testing, and clear feedback throughout development.
Please include the following in your application:
Two or three relevant physical products you personally designed or engineered. Explain your role and whether they reached manufacturing.
Your CAD software and the editable file formats you can provide.
Your experience with injection-molded plastics, silicone components, and interchangeable attachment systems.
Any experience with personal-care products, wet-use products, or textile/sponge integration.
How you would validate size, weight, and attachment performance early.
Your proposed milestones, availability, and timeline for the first printable sizing models.
Your estimated fees, included revision rounds, and any prototype or supplier coordination services you offer.
This is a project-based opportunity with a flexible budget for the right expertise. Please identify design fees and external prototype/manufacturing expenses separately.
Clear communication, weekly progress updates, and delivery of current CAD files at agreed milestones are essential.
