About MyTaxMate (
MyTaxMate is a growing New Zealand accounting and tax advisory practice. We work with individuals, small businesses, companies, trusts, Look-Through Companies (LTCs), and property investors.
A significant part of our work involves residential rental properties, property structures, GST, annual accounts, income tax returns, payroll, and client support. We are not a high-volume compliance factory. We value accurate work, practical thinking, clear communication, and building long-term client relationships.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Accountant who can become a trusted part of the team, initially managing accounting and compliance work and progressively taking greater ownership of client communication and job management.
The role
You will prepare and manage work across a portfolio of New Zealand clients. This will include accounting, reconciliations, GST, annual accounts, tax-return preparation, rental-property accounts, document follow-up, and communicating with clients.
You must be comfortable working independently, identifying issues rather than simply processing information, and escalating technical or judgment-based matters when needed.
Over time, we want this role to take more responsibility for client contact, including requesting information, following up outstanding queries, explaining routine accounting matters in plain English, and keeping jobs moving.
Key responsibilities
- Manage a portfolio of client jobs from information collection through to review.
- Reconcile Xero files, including bank, credit-card, loan, shareholder-current-account, and clearing accounts.
- Prepare draft GST returns and identify transactions requiring client clarification.
- Prepare annual financial statements, working papers, and draft income tax returns.
- Prepare rental-property accounts for individuals, joint owners, companies, LTCs and trusts.
- Allocate and review property income and expenses, including rent, interest, rates, insurance, property-management fees, repairs and maintenance, legal costs, chattels and depreciation.
- Assist with company, trust and LTC accounting work.
- Review transactions for business versus private treatment and GST treatment.
- Prepare clear client query lists and follow up clients for outstanding information.
- Maintain accurate job status, budgets, notes and deadlines in Xero Practice Manager (XPM).
- Assist with payroll, PAYE, bookkeeping and routine administration where required.
- Prepare professional draft
- Identify missing information, unusual movements, duplicate transactions, coding issues and potential tax/accounting risks.
- Work closely with the founder on complex tax, property, structuring and IRD matters.
Essential requirements
- At least 5 years’ accounting experience, preferably in an accounting firm or outsourced accounting environment.
- Ideally 10+ years’ experience.
- Strong practical experience using:
- Xero
- Xero Practice Manager (XPM)
- Microsoft Excel and Word
- Google Workspace, including Gmail, Google Drive and Google Sheets
- Experience preparing financial statements, workpapers, GST returns and income tax returns.
- Excellent bank reconciliation and bookkeeping skills.
- Strong written and spoken English, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with clients.
- Ability to manage several jobs at once, prioritise deadlines and follow up without being chased.
- High attention to detail and a strong review mindset.
- Comfortable asking sensible questions and raising issues early.
- Reliable internet, suitable home-office setup and availability during New Zealand business hours, at least partly.
Preferred experience
The following is highly desirable, but we are also happy to train the right experienced accountant:
- Experience with New Zealand accounting, tax or compliance work.
- Experience with Xero Tax.
- Knowledge of New Zealand GST, PAYE, provisional tax and IRD processes.
- Experience preparing accounts for New Zealand rental properties or property investors.
- Familiarity with New Zealand property-tax concepts, including interest deductibility, residential rental-loss ring-fencing, ownership structures, LTCs, trusts, companies, depreciation and GST considerations.
- Experience dealing directly with clients by
- Experience with Ignition, myIR, Google Forms, Calendly or similar practice-management tools.
- Experience working with Australian or New Zealand accounting firms.
You will suit this role if you are someone who:
- Takes ownership of your work and follows matters through to completion.
- Does not guess when information is unclear.
- Can distinguish between routine work and matters that need review.
- Enjoys dealing with clients professionally and building trust.
- Is organised, calm under deadlines and commercially aware.
- Can prepare work to a high standard before sending it for review.
- Wants a long-term role where your responsibility and client exposure can grow.
What we offer
- Long-term remote role with a growing New Zealand accounting practice.
- Full-time role preferred, with four days per week considered for the right candidate.
- Opportunity to develop into a senior client-management role.
- Direct exposure to NZ accounting, tax, property-investment and advisory work.
- Support and training on our systems, processes and New Zealand-specific requirements.
