About Profitwise
Profitwise Accounting is a cloud-based accounting and advisory firm headquartered in San Diego, California, with more than 20 years of consecutive growth. We help small businesses—including e-commerce brands, Amazon and Shopify sellers, managed service providers (MSPs) and digital agencies—through proactive accounting, tax and advisory services.
Our fully remote team spans the United States, the Philippines and India. We value strong relationships, smart technology and quality work, guided by six core values: Humility, Ownership, Impact, Service Excellence, Grit and Oneness.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Philippines-based Staff Accountant who enjoys detailed work, takes ownership of deadlines and wants to grow with a US accounting firm.
Your initial focus will be heavily on US sales tax compliance. You’ll help keep client filings, payments and reconciliations accurate and on schedule, with training, documented processes and manager support.
As you develop proficiency and demonstrate consistent, reliable work, you’ll gradually take on broader accounting responsibilities, including monthly bookkeeping, account reconciliations and financial reporting. This is an opportunity to build specialized knowledge while developing your accounting career.
Your Initial Focus: Sales Tax
Prepare and file monthly, quarterly and annual US sales tax returns and coordinate timely payments under firm review and authorization procedures.
Maintain an accurate compliance calendar across assigned clients.
Reconcile sales tax collected, reported and paid against QuickBooks Online, Shopify and other e-commerce records.
Monitor client sales activity for potential nexus or registration requirements and flag findings for manager review.
Assist with state registrations, sales tax notices, exemption certificates and historical cleanup projects.
Work with tools such as Avalara, TaxJar and QuickBooks Online, accounting for marketplace facilitator transactions where applicable.
Keep clear documentation and communicate early about missing information, discrepancies or deadlines at risk.
How Your Role Will Grow
As your responsibilities expand, you’ll:
Enter and categorize client transactions in QuickBooks Online.
Reconcile bank, credit card and merchant processor accounts.
Prepare monthly Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports and flag items requiring review.
Maintain organized workpapers and support routine client requests.
Follow firm processes, track time daily and work within task budgets.
Apply training and reviewer feedback to strengthen your skills and work more independently.
Progression will depend on demonstrated readiness and client needs.
What You Bring
Strong attention to detail and dependable follow-through.
Comfort with recurring deadlines and a willingness to take ownership of your work.
Basic QuickBooks Online proficiency, including transaction categorization, reconciliations and financial reports.
QuickBooks Online Level 1 certification.
A working understanding of e-commerce sales through platforms such as Shopify and Amazon.
Clear, professional written and spoken English.
Working knowledge of Excel, Word and Outlook, and confidence learning new systems.
Good judgment: you investigate questions, explain what you’ve found and ask for help when needed.
Respect for client confidentiality and organized documentation.
A reliable home office in the Philippines with stable internet and a quiet workspace.
High school diploma or equivalent.
US sales tax experience is a strong advantage. Please describe any returns, states or sales tax systems you have worked with in your application.
Additional Advantages
Hands-on experience with Avalara or TaxJar.
Experience supporting a US accounting or bookkeeping firm.
Familiarity with MSP or IT services clients.
A degree in Accountancy, Finance or a related field.
