JOB OVERVIEW

If you review US tax returns from the Philippines, you most likely do it at night, through an agency, for a firm that has never learned your name. This role is none of that.

Who we are

Monterra is a US accounting and tax firm. We have worked with business owners and high-income individuals since 1991. We run a hybrid team, with an office in Erie, Colorado and people working from home across several countries.

You would work directly with us. No agency in the middle, no account manager speaking for you, and nobody billing your hours to a client you are never allowed to talk to.

The job

You are the last set of eyes before a return goes to the client. Forms 1040, 1120-S, 1065, multi-state. You catch what the preparer missed, you d ---------- what is defensible, and then you sign it.

That signature is the point. You would be the paid preparer of record on US federal returns, which means your own PTIN with the IRS.

You keep your evenings

This is mostly a Philippine daytime role. You start in the morning in Manila and you finish in the afternoon. We ask for one overlap window into the US morning, which we will agree with you and then keep to.

We can do this because review is not a phone job. It is a judgment job, and judgment does not require you to be awake at 3am for the convenience of somebody in another time zone. If you have spent years on graveyard shift for US clients, read that paragraph again.

You keep your evenings and your weekends. You keep dinner with your family. Those are what the night shift takes and never gives back.

What it pays

$60,000 USD annually

We set that number against what US tax work pays in this market, then went past the top of it on purpose. A reviewer who signs is not a preparer with a better title, and we are not interested in hiring at a price that means you leave the moment somebody bids higher. I expect you to be the best of the best, to be able to lead your tax team through coaching, and to be able to handle a client concern with knowledge and grace.

Benefits
13th month pay. Uncommon in a contractor arrangement. We pay it anyway
Unlimited paid time off. The statutory floor in this country is five days a year. We do not count yours at all, and we expect you to spend it
Philippine daytime hours with one agreed US overlap window
Philippine public holidays observed. You work your country's calendar, not ours
Signing bonus to cover a second monitor, UPS, or generator
US CPA or EA sponsorship if you want it. We pay the fees and give you study time
An annual tax season performance bonus

What you bring

The authority to sign a US return: an active PTIN, US CPA, or EA. We care what you are authorized to do, not which letters follow your name
Several years of genuine US tax review, not preparation alone, across individual, S-corp, partnership and multi-state returns
Command of ATX or UltraTax. If your command is in another professional package, say which and we will talk
The judgment to know which questions are worth sending back to a preparer and which are noise
English strong enough to write a clear review note to a US colleague, because that is most of how we will work together
A stable home setup and the discipline to run your own day

Read this part before you apply

A review title stapled to a preparation job is common in this market. This is the real review seat, and the signature on the return is yours.

Philippine daytime means daytime. It is not a graveyard shift under a softer name.

If you want a quiet queue where work arrives, gets done, and nobody asks your opinion, this will frustrate you. We are hiring for the opinion.

Answer the following questions:
1) How many returns did you review last season, and how many did you send back?
2) You find a $400 error on a return with $2M of income, and the client wants it filed today. What do you do?
3) What is the first thing you look at on a 1065 you have never seen before?
4) Tell me the last time you told a partner or a firm owner they were wrong about a tax position, and how it ended.
