JOB OVERVIEW

Senior Accountant (Remote)

Close the books. Lead the team. Automate the busywork.

Ledger is an accounting firm for US startups and small businesses. We handle full-cycle accounting and financial reporting, and we use automation and AI to move faster without cutting corners.

We're hiring a Senior Accountant who can do the work, review it, and lead the people doing it. You'll own the close for a set of clients, manage a small team, run projects from start to finish, and help us find smarter ways to handle the manual parts of accounting.

What you'll do

Own the close

Run the monthly close for your client portfolio: reconciliations, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, deferred revenue, and financial statements
Keep bank, card, payroll, and spend platform activity flowing cleanly into the GL
Prepare adjusting entries with clear support behind every line
Build workpapers that tie back to source reports
Write short commentary a founder can read in a minute

Lead and develop people

Review staff and junior accountant work before it reaches the client
Assign work, set priorities, and keep closes on schedule
Give clear review notes and coach on the "why" behind each correction
Spot repeat issues and fix them at the source

Run projects

Lead cleanups, catch-up work, system migrations, and new client onboarding
Scope the work, set the timeline, and own the outcome

Build with AI and automation

Use tools like Claude and Codex every day, from ledger review and commentary to reconciliations and workpapers
Build and maintain workflows that remove manual steps from the close: transaction coding, rec matching, JE imports, and client requests
Check AI output with the same care you'd give a teammate's work
Share what works so the whole team gets better

Work with clients

Be a go-to contact for founders and finance teams
Ask for what you need, explain findings plainly, and join close reviews

What you bring

4+ years in accounting, with at least 2 in a firm, audit, or multi-client role
Experience reviewing work and managing or mentoring staff
Solid US GAAP: accruals, revenue recognition, prepaids, fixed assets, and leases
Advanced QuickBooks Online, plus experience with Gusto and Ramp
Strong Excel or Google Sheets skills (linked formulas, not typed-in numbers)
Comfort running several closes at once and hitting deadlines
Clear, simple written English and strong communication
A proactive, problem-solving mindset
Professional skepticism: when something doesn't tie, you find out why instead of forcing it

Nice to have

Hands-on experience with Claude, Codex, ChatGPT, or similar tools
Workflow building with Zapier, Make, or simple scripts
CPA (US or PH), or working toward it
E-commerce or startup accounting experience
System migrations or historical cleanups

How we work

Every number traces to support
Work gets reviewed before it goes to a client
If a task repeats, we automate it
We write plainly, with no jargon in anything a client reads
