JOB OVERVIEW

Role Overview

Candidates with hands-on senior electrician or electrical estimating experience, strong Simpro skills and a background estimating commercial and industrial jobs will be prioritised for this role.

Terrain Electrical needs a senior Electrical Estimator VA with two equally important jobs. The first is foundational and ongoing: building and maintaining the estimating engine inside Simpro, including the catalogue, supplier pricing, markups and pre-builds. The second is live estimating: taking a desktop quote, a tender package or the Director's on-site design and turning it into a complete, accurate Simpro quote or tender pack that is roughly 95% ready for review. That means reading drawings, running takeoffs, pricing labour realistically against site conditions, balancing gross profit across materials and labour, and writing the scope of works.

Electrical estimating is the must-have skill; data, air-con and security estimating can be taught. Success means the Director is back on the tools, quote turnaround is roughly halved, the catalogue and pre-builds are clean and growing, and the estimating process is documented well enough for the role to go full-time and later be replicated for a second estimator.

What You'll Own

Catalogue, Pricing & Pre-Build Management (Your Starting Point)

Build the estimating playbook and clean up the Simpro and Groundplan setup as the first major piece of work
Add new parts to the Simpro catalogue for suppliers that don't auto-sync, including markups
Keep price books built on primary supplier pricing, with backup suppliers as a fallback only
Run regular price checks so catalogue pricing doesn't go stale
Resolve overlapping parts across suppliers and simplify the catalogue where needed
Design, build and maintain Simpro pre-builds, including full ranges with multiple product options
Work with the Director on gross profit margins across materials, labour and overall quote value
Research competitive South East Queensland commercial pricing to keep quotes sharp
Return to catalogue and pre-build work whenever there is no live quote or tender

Estimating & Quote Preparation

Pick up jobs at "quote as desktop" status in Simpro, once the Director's site visit is complete
Handle the full range of desktop quotes, from simple pre-build jobs to full tender packages
Turn on-site designs and photos or sketches into a complete, priced proposal
Design larger jobs in Groundplan or UniFi first to confirm they work technically, then quote
Build takeoffs in Groundplan and bring them into Simpro as a full quote
Price labour realistically against site conditions: access, cable runs, weather, shift and penalty rates, internal versus subcontracted labour
Write the scope of works and proposal wording
Move quotes through Simpro statuses accurately, including reworking quotes after customer change requests

Tendering

Break down incoming tender packages and workshop the approach before building
Work independently once the strategy is set, escalating when blocked or ready for review
Build complete tender packs: cover documents, printable proposals, and files in the required formats
Prioritise work around RFQ and tender close dates

Design Support

Run maximum demand calculations in Elek Software (Terrain-specific training provided)
Use Ubiquiti UniFi and UISP Design Centers for data and network design
Apply Australian standards and Queensland requirements, including Energex and the Queensland Electricity Connection Manual

Systems, Documentation & Automation

Workshop each workflow before documenting it as an SOP
Set up and organise a dedicated OneDrive working environment
Train and maintain the business's Claude quoting artifacts and business manual
Build Claude agents to automate estimating processes where useful (a bonus, not a requirement)

Communication & Reporting

Work entirely through Microsoft 365: Teams, Outlook and OneDrive
Send a start-of-shift Teams message with the day's priorities
Send an end-of-day email report covering completed work, work in progress, and items needing review
Join weekly planning, lunch-and-learn and week-review team meetings
Route communication through the Director initially, moving to direct contact with project managers and builders once established

What We're Looking For

Experience

Hands-on electrical trade background, ideally a senior electrician who has moved off the tools
Proven estimating experience on commercial and industrial jobs and tenders
Electrical estimating is essential; data, air-con or security experience is a bonus and can be taught
Experience working to Australian standards is non-negotiable, Queensland experience preferred
Experience producing full tender packs and proposals

Technical Proficiency (Core Requirements)

Simpro: quoting, pre-builds, catalogues and price books
Supplier price book and catalogue management, including adding parts, markups and price checking
Groundplan or similar takeoff software (PlanSwift and Bluebeam experience is transferable)
Reads electrical and data drawings and symbols
Understands cable types, runs, containment, racks, server rooms and power requirements
Understands gross profit margins across materials and labour
Electrical design calculation software (e.g. Elek) is a plus
Comfortable with Microsoft 365 (Teams, Outlook, OneDrive, OneNote) and AI tools such as Claude

Organisational Skills

Manages several quotes and tenders at once, prioritising around close dates
High attention to detail across quantities, labour allowances and price book entries
Works confidently within a status-driven Simpro workflow

Non-Negotiables

Finishes a job to near-complete rather than handing it back with more questions than answers
Sets up their own environment and processes, and documents them without being asked
Confident enough to push back, question assumptions and suggest better ways of doing things
Self-manages a flexible schedule reliably with no supervision
Knows when to escalate a genuine judgement call and when to solve a routine question independently
Retains and applies answers rather than repeating the same question
Can-do attitude — this matters more than any single skill
