ABOUT SPIRITUS
Spiritus is an international initiative dedicated to renewing the great Catholic artistic and spiritual tradition through music, art, and sacred encounter.
We create performances, recordings, publications, and digital experiences that invite people to encounter beauty and open their hearts to the presence of God.
We are building a small, exceptional creative team to shape Spiritus’s visual identity, bringing imagination and artistry to projects of lasting spiritual and cultural value.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We are seeking a creative leader with significant experience in publications to shape Spiritus’s visual identity across its website, publications, video content, recording releases, and live events.
This is an opportunity to bring the richness of the Catholic artistic tradition into fresh contemporary expression, creating a visual language that draws people in and opens a space for sacred encounter.
You will lead and guide a small team of exceptional designers, with the trust and creative responsibility to carry ideas from first inspiration through to finished form.
An early centrepiece of the role will be an approximately 200-page, museum-quality art book documenting a sacred music project in France.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establish Spiritus’s branding, design concepts, and visual guidelines from the outset, setting a coherent creative direction across the website, books, documents, recording packaging, YouTube, and other video content.
- Brief and guide the Book Designer and other specialist designers. Review and approve work within the agreed creative direction, while bringing major artistic decisions to Spiritus’s leadership.
- Shape publication structure, pacing, and visual storytelling. Recommend stronger imagery, writing, and contextual material where appropriate, and provide the Book Illustrator with precise editorial and visual feedback.
- Own publication delivery from concept through production. Coordinate contributors and printers, organise content and approvals, and manage schedules, revisions, credits, and final production checks.
- Anticipate potential problems, resolve routine questions independently, and keep the creative team moving with clear priorities and concise updates.
- Work closely with the operations lead to ensure team responsibilities, timelines, and delivery remain aligned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- At least 10 years of professional experience in design and art direction, with 20+ years strongly preferred.
- A proven record of creative leadership and the ability to establish and maintain a sophisticated visual direction.
- Exceptional visual taste and strong editorial judgment, demonstrated through high-quality illustrated publications or comparable creative projects you have helped lead.
- Ability to articulate creative decisions clearly, strengthen the work of other designers, and guide complex projects through production.
- Excellent English communication skills, independent problem-solving ability, and dependable follow-through.
- Sensitivity to Catholic sacred art and music, and an understanding of and respect for Spiritus’s mission.
WORKING ARRANGEMENT
This role is structured as an ongoing part-time retainer. The retainer reserves an agreed level of capacity and responsibility, and routine timesheets are not required.
During intensive publication periods, the workload may increase to approximately 20–25 hours per week. Any additional capacity and corresponding compensation will be agreed upon in advance.
The role will work closely with Spiritus’s operations lead to maintain clear responsibilities, priorities, and delivery across the creative team.
