JOB OVERVIEW

A CFO overseeing a portfolio of fast-growing, product-based and retail brands across the UK is looking to build up the capability of the finance function properly, not just keep it running as is.

Right now, the CFO handles the bulk of the accounting personally, bookkeeping through to forecasting, across every business in the portfolio. We're hiring a Financial Controller to take full ownership of that function and build it into something stronger, working closely with the CFO throughout rather than inheriting it in isolation.

This is a senior, hands-on role built around real ownership, not a narrow, single-client bookkeeping job. The portfolio is kept deliberately focused, so the role is about doing the work well, not managing volume.

Because the businesses in the portfolio vary in size, sector and complexity, the scope of this role will shift as needs change. You'll need to be comfortable adapting to what each client requires rather than working from a fixed, unchanging list of tasks.

Important

This role isn't suited to someone who wants to keep their head down and do the basics. We're looking for someone who takes ownership of problems from discovery through to resolution, who questions how things are done and pushes for a better way when something doesn't add up, and who can hold a confident, informed conversation with the CFO about the numbers.

This is not a client-facing role. The CFO keeps direct client relationships and calls; your focus is on building and running the finance function itself.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Financial Reporting & Accounting
- Month-end close and management reporting across multiple client accounts
- Maintaining accurate financial records and reconciliations
- Supporting year-end accounting

Inventory & Operational Finance
- Inventory and landed cost accounting
- Retail deductions and operational finance support
- Managing and reconciling large datasets across multiple systems

Forecasting & Analysis
- Building and maintaining financial models, forecasts and cash flow projections
- Investigating and resolving discrepancies and variances independently
- Ad hoc financial and operational analysis

Process & Relationship Ownership
- Improving finance processes and workflows across the portfolio
- Running the day-to-day finance function with minimal oversight
- Bringing issues and improvement ideas to the CFO with confidence, not just waiting to be asked

What We're Looking For
- Genuinely proactive: you notice when something doesn't add up or a process doesn't make sense, and you push to fix it rather than working around it
- Proven experience running a finance function independently, not just contributing to one within a larger team
- Experience managing the finance function across multiple client accounts or entities at once, comfortable prioritising and moving between businesses of different sizes and complexity
- Genuine hands-on experience building management accounts and forecasts from scratch
- Comfortable producing forward-looking analysis and insight, not only reviewing and flagging issues in bookkeeping
- Strong accounting background with real exposure to product-based or inventory-heavy businesses
- Hands-on experience with inventory accounting, landed costs, reconciliations and operational finance workflows
- Experience with Amazon or e-commerce accounting operations and large transaction datasets
- Fluent in tools such as Xero, Zoho Books, QuickBooks Online and BI or reporting platforms
- CPA preferred or other similar certifications
- A confident, articulate communicator who is comfortable pushing back and defending their analysis with sound reasoning
- Naturally investigative, someone who wants to understand a business well enough to question its numbers, not simply record them
- Retail or wholesale accounting experience is a strong advantage
