# YouTube Documentary Video Editor – Long-Form Faceless Channel
We are looking for a talented **YouTube Documentary Video Editor** to join a growing faceless YouTube channel.
Our videos are story-driven documentaries focused on **Canada, cities, regional identity, history, culture, politics, economics, rivalries, and major events**.
Typical videos will be approximately **20–40 minutes long**.
This is not a simple “put stock footage over a voiceover” editing job.
We are looking for an editor who understands **storytelling, pacing, viewer retention, visual variety, and documentary-style editing**.
## WHAT YOU WILL RECEIVE
For each video, you will generally receive:
* Final voiceover
* Completed script
* Organized visual assets
* Archival photographs and footage
* B-roll
* Maps, charts, screenshots and other supporting materials
* Source information where relevant
* Editing instructions for important sequences
You will **not normally be expected to research the entire video from scratch**.
However, a strong editor should be capable of finding additional appropriate visuals when something is missing or when a better visual would significantly improve the scene.
## YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
You will turn the supplied materials into a polished, engaging YouTube documentary.
This includes:
* Editing the complete video around the voiceover
* Selecting the strongest available visuals for each narration beat
* Creating strong visual pacing
* Using archival photographs and footage effectively
* Adding maps, headlines, screenshots, documents and graphics where appropriate
* Creating simple motion graphics and animations
* Adding tasteful zooms, pans and movement to still photographs
* Using text and on-screen information when it strengthens the story
* Adding appropriate music and sound design
* Mixing audio properly
* Creating smooth transitions between sections
* Maintaining visual continuity and a consistent documentary style
* Finding supplementary visuals when necessary
* Delivering a finished video ready for YouTube
## THE EDITING STYLE
The editing should feel like a **modern YouTube documentary**, not a corporate presentation and not an over-edited TikTok video.
We value:
**Storytelling over effects.**
Every visual should help explain the story, establish a location or period, provide evidence, create emotion, or maintain viewer attention.
We do NOT want random stock footage inserted simply because something needs to appear on screen.
We also do not want excessive transitions, constant sound effects, unnecessary animation, or distracting editing tricks.
Good judgment matters.
## WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
You should have experience editing long-form YouTube videos, documentaries, video essays, history content, geography content, or similar storytelling formats.
You should understand:
* YouTube audience retention
* Documentary pacing
* Visual storytelling
* B-roll selection
* Archival imagery
* Music and sound design
* Motion graphics
* Maps and basic data visualization
* How to keep a 20–40 minute video visually interesting without making it exhausting
You should also be comfortable receiving detailed feedback and making revisions.
## SOFTWARE
Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro, or another professional editing platform is acceptable.
After Effects or similar motion-graphics capability is an advantage.
## VERY IMPORTANT: COPYRIGHT
You must understand basic copyright and licensing requirements.
Do not download random images or footage from Google, YouTube, TikTok,
Any additional assets you source must have appropriate licensing or usage rights, and the source must be documented.
## PAID TEST
Shortlisted applicants may be asked to complete a **small paid editing test of approximately 2–3 minutes**.
The same voiceover, script and asset package will be provided to shortlisted candidates so that editing quality can be compared fairly.
The test will evaluate:
* Storytelling
* Pacing
* Visual selection
* Music
* Sound design
* Graphics
* Attention to detail
* Ability to follow instructions
* Overall professional quality
## LONG-TERM OPPORTUNITY
This is intended to become an ongoing position.
We are building a library of documentary videos and expect to publish consistently.
If your work is excellent, there will be regular projects available.
We value editors who become familiar with the channel's visual language and improve with each video.
## TO APPLY
Please send:
1. A short introduction about yourself.
2. Links to **2–3 of your best long-form YouTube edits**.
3. At least one example involving documentary, history, geography, politics, economics, video essay, or similar storytelling content if available.
4. Tell us exactly what parts of those videos you personally edited.
5. Tell us what editing software you use.
6. Tell us approximately how long you would need to edit a polished 25–30 minute documentary when the voiceover, script and most visual assets are supplied.
7. Tell us your expected rate for a 25–30 minute finished video.
8. Confirm whether you are willing to complete a paid 2–3 minute editing test.
**To show that you read the entire job post, begin your application with the words:**
**“DOCUMENTARY EDITOR”**
Applications that do not include these words may not be reviewed.
Please do not send 15–20 portfolio links. Send only your strongest and most relevant work.
We are looking for someone who wants to build a **long-term working relationship**, not simply complete one video.
