About the Role

We're looking for an experienced detail-oriented, technically sharp Senior WordPress Support Engineer to keep our 200+ client WordPress websites fast, secure, and running without disruption. The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience and has a proven track record of diagnosing and resolving WordPress issues under pressure, managing site backups, staging, and migrations without surprises, and catching problems (plugin conflicts, security vulnerabilities, broken tracking scripts) before they affect one of our clients.

What the Web Maintenance Team Does

This team handles daily technical needs for our 200+ client websites, including:
Fixing site bugs, CSS revisions, and plugin/integration issues.
Managing web server troubleshooting, performance checks, and site migrations.
Identifying infected websites and improving security.
Monitoring monthly site health and working directly with WP Engine support.
As a key member of the team, you will be the escalation point for front end developers (Tier 3). You will also be the primary developer for our server environment.

Key Responsibilities & Technical Skills

Required Skills

Experience diagnosing and fixing WordPress fatal errors ("White Screen of Death", 500/502/504 gateways, PHP call stack errors, and common database issues).
Hands-on experience with Elementor Pro (theme builder, dynamic content, popups) and Gutenberg, including troubleshooting builder incompatibilities and widget script failures.
Proficiency in troubleshooting and applying fixes across PHP, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Ability to diagnose plugin conflicts, safely test updates, manage license renewals, and install/configure plugins as needed.
Experience using browser tools, visual comparison tools, or staging environments to quickly isolate regression bugs introduced by core, plugin, or theme updates, with the skills to apply targeted hotfixes or perform clean rollbacks when necessary.
Demonstrate success managing full site backups, staging environments, and seamless site transfers/migrations with minimal downtime.
Track record of optimizing WordPress sites to hit PageSpeed Insights (PSI) scores of 80+ (Mobile & Desktop) and top GTmetrix grades.
Experience deploying security plugins/firewalls (Wordfence, Solid Security, etc.), monitoring brute-force attacks, patching backend vulnerabilities, and cleaning malware.
Skill in verifying and troubleshooting custom JavaScript snippets, event pixels (Meta, GA4), call tracking (CallRail), and conversion tags using Browser Developer Tools (Console/Network tab).

Preferred Skills

Proven ability to manage and update DNS records (A, CNAME, MX, TXT, SPF, DKIM, DMARC) across various registrars (GoDaddy, Cloudflare, etc.).
Experience configuring SMTP plugins and diagnosing transactional email deliverability issues.
Experience managing caching/CDN tools without breaking third-party tracking scripts, pixels, or site functionality.
Familiarity with setting up, reading, and managing performance alerts or similar auditing tools.
Experience configuring and managing automated uptime monitoring and escalating downtime alerts outside standard hours.
Ability to establish baseline testing protocols before monthly maintenance workflows, including safe plugin updates, vulnerability scanning, and post-update QA testing.

What We Are Looking For

This role is a great fit if you want to grow your technical hard skills.

Ideal candidates:

Enjoy solving complex technical puzzles and critical thinking.
Have a strong problem-solving mindset.
Feel comfortable explaining technical issues clearly.
Are eager to learn, take ownership, and step up to urgent site issues.
Are forward-thinking problem solvers. They see where an issue is heading and plan two steps ahead to prevent downstream issues.

Our culture is very important to us and we look for team members who demonstrate these soft skills:

Proactive, reliable communicator: flags blockers and status before being asked. This team works across time zones with limited real-time overlap, so updates can't wait for someone to come ask.
Documents as they go: time logs, ticket notes, and QA steps live in the system.
Takes ownership through to verification: Uses critical thinking skills to assess if the root cause is confirmed fixed, not just the symptom.
Escalates early when something's outside their depth, rather than quietly guessing on a live client site.
Works well independently and asynchronously, while staying looped in with the maintenance and migration teams during handoffs.

TO APPLY:
Incomplete applications will not be considered.
====================

If you’re ready to join a team where you can make a lasting impact, follow the instructions below to apply:

Your Response Must Include:
- A resume or detailed work history showcasing your relevant experience.

Complete, thoughtful answers to the following questions:

1. Senior Ownership, Decision-making, and Communication
As a senior escalation point for the Web Maintenance team, you’d be solving complex technical puzzles independently. How do you document your troubleshooting steps for the rest of the team, and how do you d ---------- when to solve a problem yourself versus when to escalate?

2. Performance Optimization and Conversion/Tracking Priority
Can you walk me through your process for speeding up a slow website while ensuring that background scripts, analytics, and marketing integrations continue to function properly?

3. DNS, Domains, & Basic Networking Skills
When managing website migrations or launches, how do you handle DNS updates (like A records, CNAMEs, and MX records) to ensure the site launches seamlessly without breaking the client’s email or triggering downtime?

4. WordPress Security Best Practices
With over 150 client sites under our care, keeping sites secure and updated without causing downtime is a daily priority. What is your approach to securing WordPress websites, and what are your first steps if you discover a site has been infected with malware or a security vulnerability?

Note: This role requires availability during U.S. daytime hours to ensure effective communication and collaboration with our team and clients.
