Design & Engineering Support — Mechanical & Structural Projects

About Us
Basepoint Engineering is a Canadian structural and mechanical engineering consultancy based in Alberta, dual-registered with APEGA and EGBC. We serve clients across Western Canada on below-the-hook lifting devices and spreader beams, structural steel, flare stack analysis, industrial platforms and guardrails, and fabrication drawing packages.
This is a support role within our Canadian engineering practice. Engineering work is performed under the direction and review of our Canadian Professional Engineers, who retain responsibility for final engineering decisions and deliverables.
The Role
We're looking for someone who can look at a design and tell us what won't work before it's built — a clearance conflict, an awkward weld, a detail that looks fine on screen but is a headache to fabricate or use in the field. That instinct usually comes from having built or fixed real equipment, not just modeled it — it's the main thing we're screening for, more than software polish. This isn't a drafting-only role: you'll be expected to identify potential problems and raise concerns to the engineers you support, not just execute a fixed spec.
You'll work directly under our Professional Engineers across our project mix — lifting devices, structural steel, platforms, guardrails, and fabrication drawing packages — from concept work through 3D/2D modeling, load analysis support, and fabrication-ready drawings, using field information gathered by our local engineering team and inspectors.
What We're Looking For
Required:
Formal technical education in mechanical or structural engineering/design (degree or diploma), with the ability to understand and apply engineering codes, calculations, and design principles — not just operate CAD software
Proficiency in SolidWorks and/or Onshape
Working understanding of load analysis, free-body diagrams, and structural calculations
Strong written English — collaboration is mostly asynchronous
Nice to have — helps you stand out:
Steel fabrication or weldments experience — welding symbols, weld sizing, and producing fabrication/shop drawings for welded assemblies
Bolted and pinned connection design
Manufacturing, fabrication shop, or maintenance background — building, machining, or repairing equipment, including familiarity with tolerances and fit-up
Experience interpreting field measurements, photos, or sketches
FEA experience or experience with hydraulic/mechanical equipment
Selection Process
1. Application review
2. Portfolio walkthrough — bring one project where the design changed from concept to final. We want to hear what didn't work and how you fixed it, not just see the finished drawing.
3. Technical assessment — fundamentals, free-body diagrams, and structural calculations
4. Design scenario — a short, realistic design conflict to talk through live, so we can see how you reason through trade-offs
5. Paid practical exercise — a small, representative design task (roughly 2–4 hours), used to evaluate your design judgment, technical fundamentals, and ability to communicate your approach
