JOB OVERVIEW

Senior Python Engineer / Architect — Long-Term Role

We're a US insurance company with a live platform called Insure Stack. It takes a customer's information and gets insurance quotes from many carriers at the same time — the goal is all quotes back in under 10 seconds.

Right now it doesn't work reliably. When a quote fails, someone on our team spends 1–2 hours fixing it by hand, and the same problems keep coming back. We believe the cause is in how the system is built, not how hard people are working.

We're looking for a senior Python engineer to take ownership of this — to figure out what's actually wrong architecturally and rebuild it so it works reliably. You'd be the most senior engineer on a small team, and you'd be writing code every week, not just directing.

What you'd work on

Figure out why quoting is slow and unreliable, and fix it at the architecture level
Make many carrier requests run in parallel and finish inside a strict time limit
Build proper error handling: timeouts, retries, and graceful failure instead of crashes
Add logging and tracing so problems can be diagnosed in minutes instead of hours
Make sure fixes are permanent — the system should learn, not repeat the same failures

What we need

8+ years of professional software engineering, with real ownership of system design
Strong Python, including async programming and concurrency (this is essential)
You've worked on a system where speed mattered and can explain how you made it faster
Experience with reliability: timeouts, retries, handling failures properly
You can take over an existing system that someone else built and improve it
Experience at a small company or startup where you owned real outcomes
You d ---------- trade-offs on your own — you can weigh doing it properly against doing it quickly, and stand behind the decision
You set the code-quality standard — your code is readable and reviewable, and you improve the code around you
Good written English and clear communication

Nice to have

Google Cloud (Cloud Run, Cloud Storage)
Experience with browser automation or web scraping
Insurance, fintech, or other regulated industry experience

The bar we hire against

We use AI coding tools a lot, and they handle plenty of routine work well. The person we hire needs to bring what those tools can't: strong judgment about what actually matters in a system, and enough ownership that we can hand over a whole area and trust it's in good hands.

Working hours

9:00 AM EST start for the first 90 days while you get situated with the platform and the team. After that, there may be room to revisit the schedule.
