Here’s a tighter, compelling version designed to attract a storyteller, not just a technician.
PART-TIME VIDEO EDITOR & STORYTELLER
Help us turn a real family journey into a growing media brand.
We’re looking for a talented part-time video editor with strong storytelling instincts to help us document an unusual season of family life, business, travel, faith and personal growth.
This isn’t a role for someone who simply cuts clips together.
We need someone who can watch raw footage and recognise:
There’s a story in here.
Then bring it to life.
ABOUT US
We are The Banfords, an Australian family currently spending an extended period in Thailand, primarily Phuket.
A lot of our content currently follows Laura and her 10-year-old son Harrison as we live, work, train and learn together.
We’re documenting:
* Travelling and living through Thailand
* Homeschooling on the road
* Muay Thai, boxing and fitness
* Thai culture and everyday life
* Building and running businesses remotely
* Discipline, confidence and resilience
* Mother-and-son conversations and family moments
* Our Christian faith as it naturally appears in our lives
* The wins, mistakes, difficult days and funny moments along the way
At the centre of what we do are Faith, Family, Fitness, Freedom and Purpose.
We don’t want fake influencer content.
We don’t want cheesy family-vlogger content.
And we don’t want everything polished to the point where it stops feeling real.
Our style is honest, grounded, hopeful, strong and conviction-led.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We’re looking for an editor who wants to become part of building something over time.
Initially, this is a part-time remote role, but there is significant potential for the workload to grow as our YouTube channel, family brand and personal brands develop.
We will send you raw footage from phones, cameras and potentially action cameras.
Your job is to turn that footage into finished, platform-ready content that requires little or no additional editing from us.
Content will include:
* Instagram Reels
*
* YouTube Shorts
* Longer-form YouTube episodes
You need to understand that editing a 30-second Reel and building an engaging 15-minute YouTube episode require very different storytelling skills.
WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING
You’ll be responsible for:
* Reviewing raw footage and identifying the strongest moments
* Finding hooks, storylines and emotional beats
* Cutting unnecessary footage
* Creating engaging pacing without making everything frantic
* Knowing when to edit quickly and when to let a moment breathe
* Building strong opening hooks and maintaining retention
* Music selection
* Sound design
* Colour correction and basic grading
* Captions and subtitles
* Clean transitions
* Basic motion graphics where they genuinely add value
* Formatting videos correctly for each platform
* Turning longer footage into multiple short-form pieces where appropriate
* Delivering finished exports ready to upload
* Potentially helping with YouTube titles, hooks and thumbnail concepts
For thumbnails, we generally favour simple, bold, high-contrast concepts built around ONE clear idea rather than cluttered designs.
THE EDITING STYLE
Think:
Documentary storytelling meets modern social-media editing.
One video could be Harrison training Muay Thai, travelling somewhere new or taking on a challenge.
The next could be Laura and Harrison having a conversation about confidence, a difficult homeschooling day, a reflection on faith, a business discussion or a moment that is genuinely emotional.
We need an editor with enough judgement to know the difference.
We are not looking for someone who adds transitions, emojis, graphics, zooms and sound effects every two seconds because they can.
Story comes first.
The edit should enhance what happened — not overpower it.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Ideally, you:
* Have proven professional video-editing experience
* Understand Instagram,
* Understand hooks, retention and modern social-media behaviour
* Have strong storytelling instincts
* Understand longer-form YouTube structure
* Can work independently without needing every edit explained
* Are reliable with deadlines and turnaround times
* Communicate clearly
* Are comfortable receiving large amounts of raw footage
* Are organised with files and projects
* Have excellent attention to detail
* Are willing to understand our family, values and bigger mission
* Can develop and maintain a consistent editing style over time
Most importantly, we want someone who cares about the story.
BONUS SKILLS
Experience in any of the following would be valuable:
* YouTube channel editing
* Documentary editing
* Travel content
* Fitness or combat-sports content
* Family/lifestyle content
* Personal brands
* Christian or faith-based content
Faith is part of our story, but we are not trying to make every piece of content feel like a religious advertisement.
You do not need to share all of our beliefs, but you do need to respect our Christian values and be comfortable editing content where faith naturally appears.
WHAT THE CONTENT CAN LOOK LIKE
One week you might be editing:
A high-energy Muay Thai training session.
A funny travel moment.
A challenge Harrison takes on.
A Thailand adventure.
Another week it might be:
A mother and son talking honestly about life.
A difficult day homeschooling.
A reflection about faith.
A conversation about business, purpose or discipline.
A quiet family moment that doesn’t need much editing at all.
We want somebody who can recognise what each story needs rather than forcing every video into the same template.
HOURS & WORKING ARRANGEMENT
* Part-time initially
* Fully remote
* Flexible location
* Ongoing weekly content
* Potential to develop into considerably more work over time
We are much more interested in building a long-term relationship with one great editor who understands our style than constantly cycling through freelancers.
HOW TO APPLY
Please send us:
1. A short introduction about yourself
2. Where you are based
3. Your editing experience
4. Links to 3 examples of your BEST work
5. At least one strong short-form example
6. At least one longer-form storytelling example, if available
7. Your usual turnaround time
8. Your preferred pricing structure — hourly, per video, weekly retainer or monthly retainer
9. What editing software you use
10. Why you believe you would suit this specific project
PLEASE DO NOT SEND US 30 RANDOM VIDEOS.
We would rather watch three exceptional edits that clearly demonstrate your taste, judgement and storytelling ability.
Quality over quantity.
PAID EDITING TEST
Applicants who make the shortlist will be invited to complete a small paid editing test using footage supplied by us.
We may give the same raw footage to several shortlisted editors.
This allows us to compare how each person interprets the exact same material — including:
* Story selection
* Opening hook
* Pacing
* Music
* Creativity
* Emotional judgement
* Retention
* Overall feel
We’re not looking for someone to simply copy our instructions.
We want to see what you see in the footage.
WHY THIS ROLE IS DIFFERENT
This isn’t just another freelance editing job.
You would be helping shape the way a real family story is documented while we travel, homeschool, train, build businesses, raise a son, explore faith and figure things out as we go.
There will be great moments.
There will be difficult moments.
There will be funny moments.
There will be stories we probably don’t even realise we’re capturing until a great editor sees them.
If you’re the type of editor who watches raw footage and immediately starts thinking about story, emotion, tension, character and what happens next, we’d love to hear from you.
Come help us build the story of The Banfords.
