WE'RE HIRING: SENIOR PUBLICATION DESIGNER - ART BOOKS & EDITORIAL
Remote | Philippines
Project-Based / Contract
Spiritus is seeking an exceptional Senior Publication Designer to design and lay out a major 200-page art book combining classical art, sacred music, photography, historical materials, manuscripts, musical scores, and original writing.
The finished publication is intended to be a museum-quality object in its own right: visually beautiful, exceptionally refined, and worthy of the artistic and historical material it contains.
Our visual world draws heavily from classical art, sacred music, historic architecture, manuscripts, and the great traditions of Western art and design.
We are looking for a designer capable of working sensitively with this material while making the finished book feel contemporary and alive.
THE PROJECT
The book will combine substantial editorial content with visual materials including:
- Classical and sacred artwork
- Architectural and location photography
- Historical images and manuscripts
- Musical scores and notation
- Portraits and archival material
- Essays
- Commentary
- Captions
- Quotations
- Other editorial text
The designer will transform these materials into a coherent and sophisticated visual experience across approximately 200 pages.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Establish the overall visual language and design system
- Develop typography, grids, page architecture, chapter openings, captions, and recurring editorial elements
- Design and lay out approximately 200 pages in Adobe InDesign
- Create thoughtful relationships between text, artwork, photography, manuscripts, and musical materials
- Make sophisticated editorial decisions regarding scale, pacing, hierarchy, whitespace, and image placement
- Collaborate with the editorial and project-management team as content is finalized
- Incorporate revisions accurately and efficiently
- Prepare press-ready files
- Coordinate technical requirements for high-quality offset printing
- Maintain exceptional consistency and attention to detail
QUALIFICATIONS
- Outstanding portfolio of sophisticated publication and editorial design
- Significant professional experience designing substantial books or long-form publications
- Exceptional typography and page-composition skills
- Expert Adobe InDesign skills
- Strong Photoshop and Illustrator ability
- Experience with image-rich, high-end editorial material
- Deep understanding of grids, hierarchy, pacing, typography, and print production
- Ability to manage a complex publication containing hundreds of individual visual and textual elements
- Excellent attention to detail
- Excellent file organization
- Ability to work independently while responding thoughtfully to artistic direction and editorial feedback
Experience designing any of the following is especially desirable:
- Art books
- Museum publications
- Exhibition catalogues
- Photography books
- Architecture books
- Luxury publications
- Publications for major cultural institutions
Familiarity with classical art, sacred art, classical music, musical scores, manuscripts, or historical materials is an additional advantage.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
This is not primarily a production-layout role.
We want someone with exceptional visual judgment who can determine how a beautiful publication should unfold from beginning to end.
The successful designer should be equally comfortable creating a highly restrained page containing only a few lines of text and a visually rich spread containing several images, captions, and historical materials.
The standard is exceptionally high.
The finished publication should feel completely at home in a museum shop, major art bookstore, or the catalogue of an important cultural institution.
TO APPLY
Please send:
1. Resume/CV
2. Portfolio
3. Complete or substantial examples of multi-page publications you personally designed
4. Description of your specific role in each project
Evidence of exceptional long-form book design is the most important qualification.
