Shopify Developer / Technical Specialist
We are looking for an experienced Shopify developer to help maintain, troubleshoot, and improve an established eCommerce website.
This is not primarily a product-entry, merchandising, or general Shopify administration role. We need someone who is comfortable working at the technical level of Shopify: themes, Liquid, JavaScript, third-party applications, collection and filtering logic, performance, and technical SEO.
What You’ll Be Working On
The immediate project involves troubleshooting several issues on an existing Shopify store, but we’re looking for someone with the broader technical expertise to identify the underlying causes and implement solutions safely.
Responsibilities may include:
* Troubleshooting and configuring third-party Shopify apps and integrations, including search, autocomplete, filtering, and merchandising applications
* Working with Shopify themes, Liquid, JavaScript, CSS, templates, sections, and related theme code
* Diagnosing conflicts between apps, theme customizations, and Shopify’s native functionality
* Configuring and troubleshooting Shopify Search & Discovery functionality and third-party search platforms such as Searchanise
* Troubleshooting collection pages, including incorrect products appearing in collections, collection rules, tags, metafields, filtering, and product sorting
* Understanding and correcting automated and manual collection logic
* Investigating problems where theme or application changes unexpectedly affect templates, collection content, navigation, or other areas of the site
* Reviewing and addressing technical issues identified through SEO/site audits
* Identifying urgent technical SEO problems versus issues that can reasonably be addressed during a future site redesign
* Improving site performance, crawlability, structured data, redirects, indexing behavior, and other technical Shopify/SEO issues where appropriate
* Maintaining existing functionality while making changes rather than solving one problem at the expense of another
Safe Development & Testing Is Important
We need someone who follows a proper Shopify development workflow.
Changes should generally be made to a duplicate/unpublished theme first, thoroughly tested, and presented for review before anything is deployed to the live site.
You should be comfortable:
* Duplicating, managing, and cleaning up Shopify themes
* Developing and testing against unpublished themes
* Previewing changes without affecting the production storefront
* Testing changes across product, collection, search, navigation, and other relevant templates
* Identifying potential dependencies before modifying theme code
* Deploying approved changes to production safely
* Rolling back changes when necessary
We specifically want to avoid making experimental changes directly to the live theme.
Current Priorities
Our first priority is an existing Searchanise implementation. Searchanise has updated its integration for Shopify, and the store needs to be configured so features such as search autocomplete, SKU/product matching, search suggestions, menus, and filtering operate correctly.
A previous attempt to implement the recommended changes caused unintended problems elsewhere on the site, including collection pages and collection-page content. We need someone capable of understanding the integration rather than simply following installation instructions and hoping it works.
Our second priority is diagnosing problems with Shopify collections and product sorting. Some collection pages currently display products that clearly do not belong in those collections. We need the collection rules, product data, filtering, sorting, theme logic, and any app involvement investigated and corrected.
We also have a technical site audit identifying additional issues. We’d like the developer to review these findings, determine which require immediate attention, and fix urgent problems. Less critical items may be incorporated into a larger upcoming site redesign.
Skills We’re Looking For
Strong experience with:
* Shopify theme development
* Shopify Liquid
* HTML/CSS
* JavaScript
* Shopify’s collection and product architecture
* Automated and manual collections
* Metafields and product data
* Search and filtering systems
* Third-party Shopify app integrations
* Debugging theme/app conflicts
* Shopify Search & Discovery
* Technical SEO for Shopify
* Performance troubleshooting
* Safe staging, testing, and deployment practices
Experience with Searchanise specifically would be a strong plus, but we’re more interested in finding someone who understands Shopify well enough to diagnose integration problems properly.
What We’re Looking For in a Developer
We’re looking for someone who can investigate a problem, determine why it is happening, and recommend the correct solution—not someone who needs every change specified line by line.
You should be comfortable inheriting an existing Shopify site, reading and understanding work done by previous developers, and distinguishing between theme problems, Shopify configuration problems, product-data problems, and third-party app problems.
Good communication is also important. Before making significant changes, we’d like a concise explanation of what you found, what you recommend changing, and whether there are any risks or dependencies.
When Applying
Please briefly describe:
* Your experience developing and troubleshooting Shopify stores
* Your experience with Liquid and custom Shopify themes
* Your experience troubleshooting third-party Shopify apps
* Any experience with Searchanise or similar search/filtering applications
* Your experience diagnosing collection/filtering issues
* Your familiarity with technical SEO on Shopify
* How you normally develop and test changes before deploying them to a live Shopify store
Please include examples of Shopify sites you’ve worked on and, if possible, examples of troubleshooting or repair work rather than only new site builds.
