I’m looking for a video editor to work with me on a YouTube channel focused on global health, medicine, science, and current events.
My videos are usually 15–17 minutes long:
* Talking-head commentary and reactions
* Longer clips from original/source videos that I am analyzing or commenting on
* News footage and other supporting B-roll
* Screenshots, documents, charts, and simple graphics
* On-screen source labels and text
This is not a high-volume faceless YouTube channel. The videos are research-heavy and should have a clean documentary/commentary style rather than constant effects, zooms, or flashy editing.
At first, I will provide a nearly completed story cut in DaVinci Resolve, which will establish:
* The main sequence of the video
* Which talking-head takes I want to use
* The important original/source clips that I am reacting to
* The overall argument and structure
Your job will be to take that story cut and bring it much closer to a finished video.
* Tightening pauses, repetitions, dead space, and unnecessary material
* Improving pacing
* Smoothing cuts and transitions
* Adding appropriate B-roll, screenshots, documents, and supporting visuals
* Creating simple, professional graphics and text
* Adding source labels
* Basic audio cleanup and leveling
* Reframing/punch-ins when useful
* Helping make the video visually engaging without over-editing it
I am looking for someone interested in a long-term working relationship, not just one-off editing jobs.
Initially, I will make the major story decisions myself, but as you become familiar with my style, I would like you to gradually take on more editorial responsibility. This could eventually include:
* Choosing supporting footage
* Selecting clips from source videos
* Making more substantial tightening decisions
* Helping assemble sections of the story cut from raw talking-head footage and source material
* Eventually taking a video from much earlier in the editing process to near-final
I expect this to be something we learn together over multiple videos.
DaVinci Resolve is required. You can use either Mac or Windows, but I use Resolve, and we need to be able to exchange and collaborate on Resolve projects.
I am particularly interested in someone who:
* Has strong basic editing skills
* Has excellent English comprehension
* Can follow a complicated argument or story
* Has good judgment about pacing
* Knows when *not* to add an effect
* Can take detailed feedback and apply it consistently
* Is reliable and communicates well
* Wants to learn the style of one channel over time
* Is interested in regular, ongoing work
Experience with documentary, news, educational, science, commentary, or video-essay content would be especially useful.
You do not need to be a highly experienced senior editor. I am open to someone earlier in their editing career who has good instincts and wants to improve.
For the initial workflow, I expect to pay approximately $100 USD per finished 15–17 minute video, depending on the amount of work required. The rate can increase as you become more familiar with the channel and take on more responsibility.
Before choosing an editor for regular work, I will invite a few finalists to complete the same paid editing audition. The audition will involve approximately 2–3 minutes of finished video using real footage from an upcoming video.
Please send:
1. A short introduction about yourself and your editing experience.
2. Links to 3 examples of your most relevant work. Please do not send a large generic portfolio.
3. Tell me how long you have been using DaVinci Resolve and whether you use the free or Studio version.
4. Tell me approximately how many hours you would expect to spend editing a 15–17 minute video given the workflow described above.
5. Watch at least one video out of the last five from my YouTube channel, Furious Doctors (
I’m hoping to find one editor who can work with me regularly, learn the channel’s style, and gradually take on more of the editing process.
