## About the Role

Taylor Contractors is seeking an experienced **Quantity Surveyor / Estimator based in the Philippines** to join our growing New Zealand construction and infrastructure business.

This is not a basic administration or data-entry estimating position. We are looking for someone with genuine **Quantity Surveying, construction estimating and tendering experience** who can take ownership of pricing jobs from initial enquiry through to a complete internal estimate and customer-ready quotation.

You will receive jobs ranging from straightforward plumbing and drainage repairs through to commercial projects, council infrastructure works, drainage installations, civil works and formal tenders.

Your responsibility will be to review all information provided, understand and quantify the complete scope, research anything required, apply our established pricing system and historical project data, and prepare accurate and commercially sound estimates.

A major part of this role will involve using **AI as an estimating and research tool**. The successful candidate must be highly capable with technology and willing to combine traditional Quantity Surveying skills with AI, historical company data, supplier pricing and market research.

## Key Responsibilities

### Estimating & Quantity Surveying

* Review drawings, specifications, engineering reports, CCTV reports, site photographs, client scopes and tender documentation.
* Complete detailed quantity take-offs from construction and engineering drawings.
* Identify the complete scope of works before pricing.
* Calculate labour, materials, plant, machinery, subcontractors, transport, disposal, reinstatement and other project costs.
* Build detailed internal estimates using Taylor Contractors' established pricing structure.
* Use previous completed projects and historical pricing to benchmark new estimates.
* Research current New Zealand market rates, supplier pricing and subcontractor costs where required.
* Apply appropriate overheads, mark-ups, margins, contingencies and risk allowances.
* Prepare fixed-price quotations, estimates, schedules of rates and tender submissions.
* Identify exclusions, assumptions, qualifications and potential variations.
* Review project risk before prices are submitted.
* Assist with variation pricing and additional works during live projects.
* Maintain accurate estimating records for future benchmarking.

### Tendering & Contract Works

The Quantity Surveyor will assist with pricing and preparing tenders for:

* Residential projects.
* Commercial plumbing and drainage.
* Industrial works.
* Civil construction.
* Council infrastructure.
* Wastewater.
* Stormwater.
* Water mains.
* Drainage renewals.
* Excavation.
* Pipeline repairs.
* Reinstatement.
* Maintenance contracts.
* Scheduled/rate-based contracts.
* Principal contractor and subcontract packages.

You must be comfortable reading tender documents and identifying requirements that may affect pricing, including programme requirements, preliminaries, access restrictions, traffic management, health and safety requirements, bonds, warranties, retentions, insurances, subcontractor requirements and other commercial conditions.

### AI-Assisted Estimating

AI will be an important part of this position.

You will be expected to use AI systems to:

* Analyse project information.
* Assist with drawing and specification review.
* Research unfamiliar products and construction methodologies.
* Compare new projects against historical jobs.
* Develop detailed scopes of work.
* Identify potentially missed items.
* Research New Zealand construction requirements.
* Prepare quotation descriptions.
* Prepare inclusions and exclusions.
* Review tender documentation.
* Assist with commercial and contractual analysis.
* Improve estimating speed and consistency.

**AI is an estimating assistant, not a replacement for professional judgement.**

The Quantity Surveyor remains responsible for checking quantities, assumptions, rates and scope before an estimate is submitted for approval.

## Systems & Technology

The successful candidate should be highly capable with:

* **Microsoft Excel** – strong competency is essential.
* **Google Sheets.**
* **Google Drive.**
* **Google Docs.**
* **Gmail / Google Workspace.**
* AI platforms including ChatGPT and Claude.
* PDF drawings and construction documentation.
* Quantity take-off and estimating software.
* Construction management systems.

Experience with systems such as Fergus, Xero or similar construction platforms is advantageous but can be taught.

Advanced spreadsheet skills are strongly preferred, including formulas, pricing schedules, cost comparisons, quantity calculations and estimating templates.

## Required Experience

Applicants should have:

* Previous professional experience as a **Quantity Surveyor, Construction Estimator or Cost Estimator**.
* Demonstrated experience pricing construction projects.
* Experience completing quantity take-offs from drawings.
* Experience preparing tenders.
* Understanding of construction contracts and commercial project requirements.
* Ability to interpret architectural, civil and engineering drawings.
* Strong understanding of labour, materials, plant and subcontractor costing.
* Excellent Excel and spreadsheet skills.
* Strong written English.
* Excellent attention to detail.
* Strong independent research skills.
* Confidence using AI and modern technology.
* Ability to work independently in a remote environment.

Experience working with **New Zealand, Australian or UK construction companies** would be highly advantageous.

## Highly Desirable Experience

Preference will be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:

* Plumbing.

## What Good Performance Looks Like

A successful estimator should be able to receive a project and independently work through:

**Project documents → scope review → quantity take-off → market/supplier research → historical price comparison → labour and plant assessment → internal cost estimate → margin/risk review → inclusions/exclusions → tender/quotation → management approval.**

We want someone who actively looks for what could have been missed.

For example, if drawings show wastewater, stormwater, reinstatement, traffic management and council connections, the estimator should identify **all five components** rather than simply pricing the most obvious pipeline.

Accuracy is more important than simply producing estimates quickly.

The successful candidate must understand that good estimating is not simply calculating quantities.
