A fast-growing health-technology company building a real-time IoT monitoring platform for senior care is hiring a Senior Backend Engineer to act as technical lead for a small, high-quality engineering team. Our wireless sensors run continuously in homes and care facilities, streaming event and vitals data over MQTT to our cloud. When someone falls, an alert has to reach a monitoring centre in seconds. Missed events are not acceptable, and we operate under strict uptime commitments to enterprise partners across the US, UK, Canada and Australia.
We have a strong in-house team but no senior technical leader who is close to the code. That is the gap this role fills.
What you will do
Review every pull request before merge. You are the merge gate and the standard-setter for code quality.
Run a short daily standup, keep timelines honest, and flag when work is slipping or an estimate is wrong.
Be the founder's technical eyes on the team: report on delivery, surface who is blocked, and recommend where the team needs to improve.
Own backend architecture for our real-time pipeline: MQTT ingestion, message brokers, event processing, and the path from device to alert.
Answer enterprise customers' technical and integration questions directly, within hours, so delivery never waits on the founder.
Work alongside a managed DevOps provider who owns infrastructure and reliability. You own whether the architecture is sound and product-safe; they own the plumbing.
What we need
10+ years building backend systems in production, still hands-on with the code.
Deep Node.js and MongoDB, plus real experience with message brokers (RabbitMQ or Kafka) and persistent connections (WebSocket or MQTT) under load.
You have built a system with many concurrent connections streaming continuously, and you remember exactly what broke and how you fixed it.
Strong code reviewer who can lead senior engineers through technical direction, not politics.
Can explain a technical risk or timeline to a non-technical founder in plain language.
IoT, real-time telemetry, or healthcare-adjacent experience is a strong advantage.
Nice to have, not required
Hands-on Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, or observability (Prometheus, Grafana). You will not own infrastructure, but you will work with the team that does.
How this works
Full-time, fully remote, one fixed daily standup slot plus flexible hours.
Direct line to the founder, no layers. This is a hands-on technical leadership role, not people management and not pre-sales.
To apply, answer both in your message
Describe one real-time or high-concurrency system you built. How many concurrent connections or messages per second, and what broke first when you scaled?
Single-instance MongoDB, 5,000 devices each streaming vitals every few seconds. What breaks first and what do you do about it?
