Tax Agent — Wilkins & Associates
South Carolina | Remote | 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM EST Required | Seasonal with Year-Round Growth Potential
Wilkins & Associates is a growing tax, accounting, and advisory firm serving individuals and small businesses across South Carolina and beyond. Our services include tax preparation, bookkeeping, payroll, IRS resolution, and CFO advisory. We are seeking a motivated, detail-oriented Tax Agent who is experienced in both individual and business tax returns to join our team for the current and upcoming tax seasons.
Compensation & Schedule
Competitive per-return or hourly pay (based on experience and production)
Bonus opportunities and long-term advancement
Required availability: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, Monday through Friday. This is a set schedule, not flexible hours. Applicants outside the Eastern time zone must be able to work these hours consistently.
Position Overview
The Tax Agent prepares and files accurate individual and business returns, researches tax positions before taking them, works directly with clients, and ensures full compliance with IRS regulations and firm standards. A significant portion of our client base consists of small business owners, so the ability to prepare business entity returns independently is required, not optional. Because this role involves direct verbal communication with clients, the ability to speak clear, professional English is also required. The role demands professionalism, sound judgment, and an unwavering commitment to accuracy and confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities
Business Return Preparation
Prepare and file S-corporation (1120-S), partnership (1065), and corporate (1120) returns as assigned
Prepare Schedule C, Schedule E, and Schedule F returns for sole proprietors, rental owners, and farm clients
Produce and reconcile Schedules K-1 and confirm they tie to the entity return
Track shareholder and partner basis, distributions, and capital accounts
Review reasonable compensation for S-corporation owners and flag concerns to the reviewer
Reconcile client books to the tax return and identify entries that require adjustment before filing
Handle depreciation schedules, fixed asset additions and disposals, Section 179, and bonus depreciation
Coordinate the flow between the business return and the owner's personal 1040
Individual Return Preparation & Filing
Prepare and file federal, state, and local individual returns, including multi-state filings
Build supporting schedules and workpapers (vehicle, home office, cost of goods sold, owner compensation)
Prepare extensions, estimated tax payments, and amended returns as needed
Monitor e-file acknowledgments, correct rejections, and confirm every return is accepted — not just transmitted
Tax Research (Required)
Conduct independent tax research on unclear, complex, or unusual client positions before a return is filed
Use IRS publications, the Internal Revenue Code, regulations, rulings, and professional research tools to reach a supportable conclusion
Document research findings in writing with the authority cited, and attach it to the client file
Research state and local filing requirements for entities operating in multiple jurisdictions
Stay current on tax law changes and bring anything that affects our client base to the review team
Client Work
Collect intake documents, review for completeness, and follow up on missing items
Review completed returns with clients by phone or video and explain results clearly in plain language
Identify tax exposure, risk, and savings opportunities and propose compliant solutions
Support tax planning and advisory conversations under the direction of senior staff
Assist with IRS and state notices, including transcript review and drafting responses on resolution cases
Compliance & Firm Standards
Confirm a signed engagement letter is in place for the specific service before any work begins; new or additional services require a new engagement letter
Obtain required client authorizations (including Forms 8821 and 7216 where applicable) before contacting taxing authorities or releasing information
Maintain strict compliance with IRS Circular 230, firm policy, and ethical standards
Safeguard all client data at the highest level of confidentiality
Apply for and maintain an active PTIN
Keep client records, notes, and status updates current in firm systems and CRM
Conduct client communication through the firm's client portal, not personal
Attend all required training and compliance sessions
Flag anything unclear to the reviewer before submission, not after
