About Teach 1-2-1

Teach 1-2-1 is New Zealand's leading online tutoring service. We give New Zealand children one-to-one lessons with a real teacher, at home, in maths, English and the sciences.

We are a small team, and we work the way good teachers want to work. We do not fill your day with meetings or paperwork. We give you the resources, the training and the support you need, and then we let you teach.

Your work matters. Many of our students have lost confidence in a large classroom. You will be the person who gives it back to them. You will teach the same children for months and years, and you will watch them improve.

The pay is simple and it is certain. Qualified teachers earn up to NZ$10 per hour. We pay you for 20 hours every week from your very first week, even while we are still building your timetable. You do not wait months to earn a full income.

Our teaching hours

Our students live in New Zealand, so we work to New Zealand time. All times below are New Zealand time.

Monday to Friday: 3:30pm to 9:00pm NZ time. (About 10:30am to 5:00pm in the Philippines. New Zealand changes its clocks twice a year, so this can move by one hour.)
Saturday: 10:00am to 4:00pm NZ time. (About 5:00am to 12:00pm in the Philippines.)

We build your timetable inside these hours and give it to you. Your lessons then stay at the same times each week, so your students always know when to expect you, and so your 20 hours of guaranteed pay are protected.

Please only apply if you can work inside these hours, including Saturday mornings. This role is not casual work to fit around another job.

What you will do

Teach one-to-one online lessons on Google Meet to New Zealand students aged 5 to 18.
Prepare each lesson using our resource library, which follows the New Zealand curriculum.
Write a short report for the parent after every lesson. Google Meet creates an AI summary of your lesson, so this takes only a few minutes.
Track how each student is progressing, and change your teaching when a student needs something different.
Build a warm and trusting relationship with each student and their family.
Teach the timetable we give you, at the same times each week.
Join our team training sessions and tell us what you need to teach well.

What you need

Essential:
You are a qualified teacher with a valid professional teaching licence.
Your main subject is maths, English, or one of the sciences, and you can teach it confidently up to Senior High School level (age 18).
You can also teach a second subject from maths, English or the sciences to elementary students (up to age 12).
Your spoken and written English is excellent. Our lessons are one-to-one, so your students hear you and speak with you for the whole hour.
You can commit to 20 or more hours each week inside our teaching hours above, including Saturday mornings.
You have a computer, a headset with a microphone, a reliable internet connection, and a quiet place to teach.

Helpful, but not essential:

Experience teaching online, or teaching one student at a time.
Experience with the New Zealand curriculum, or another international curriculum.
Confidence using Google Meet and Google Docs.

Please note: our need is mainly with older students. If all of your teaching experience is with elementary children, this particular role is not the right one for you. Our needs change as we grow, so please watch for our future adverts.
