JOB OVERVIEW

Purplefish is a well-funded tech startup based in New York City. We build software that does automated material and labor takeoff from piping isometric drawings for industrial contractors and pipe fabricators in the US. Our QA team already includes 2 amazing teammates in the Philippines who have been with us for over two years, and we're growing it.

THIS IS NOT A TRADITIONAL ESTIMATION JOB. You'll use your estimation skills in a new way: checking the work of software instead of producing bids. It's a rare chance to sit at the intersection of tech and the trade you know. Your findings directly shape how the product improves every week, and you'll get deep exposure to how modern software is built while doing work only an experienced piping estimator can do.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
- QA our software's take-offs from piping ISOs: find mistakes, missed items, and wrong counts
- Do independent manual material take-offs (MTO) from isometric drawing packages so we can compare results and measure accuracy
- Count welds and do labor takeoff from ISOs, which means genuinely interpreting the drawings, not just counting symbols
- Build clean bills of materials (BOM) and document errors so our engineers can fix them
- Help us understand where the software falls short of what a real estimator would catch

WHO WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Real experience doing material and labor takeoffs from piping isometrics (industrial work: oil and gas, chemical, power, process plants). Quantity surveying (QS) or mechanical engineering backgrounds welcome
- You can read ISOs, spool drawings, and spec sheets confidently: fittings, valves, welds, bolt-ups, pipe schedules. P&ID experience is a plus, not required
- Detail-obsessed. You enjoy finding the error nobody else caught
- Strong written and spoken English. You'll be explaining errors to a US engineering team
- Strong Excel skills. AutoCAD experience is a plus
- We prefer someone who wants to work US hours (Eastern time), but there may be an opportunity for a different schedule for the right person
-Part time and full time are both a possibility

OUR HIRING PROCESS
Shortlisted candidates will do a live takeoff assessment over video call, where you'll walk us through a take-off from a real ISO package and explain your reasoning as you go. This role requires genuine, demonstrated skill reading isometrics. Please only apply if you're confident doing this work live.

WHY JOIN
- Stable, long-term role with a funded company, not project work that dries up
- Work directly with the founders and engineering team
- Your expertise is the product's quality bar. This role has real influence

TO APPLY
Tell us briefly about your experience doing material and labor takeoffs from ISOs, including weld counting. Also your preferred hours/time zone.
